"So, you finally admitted to yourself that you loved Varian," Rapunzel says, smirking.

"Hey, no commentary from the back!" Cassandra says. "You've already heard this story."

"Now that you knew you were in love with Daddy, what happened?" Opal asks.

"Nothing," Varian teases, receiving a shove from his wife.

"Who's side are you on?!" Cassandra says as Varian snickers.

"What do you mean nothing?" Opal looks tremendously disappointed. "You knew he loved you. Why not tell him?"

"Because, kiddo, I was still afraid," Cassandra replies. "I know you are too young to understand this, but being in a relationship requires being vulnerable. And that wasn't something I was good at being."

Opal sighs exasperatedly, kicking her blanket off. Cassandra chuckles and turns to Varian. "She really is your daughter."

"You mean our daughter," he corrects, pulling Opal's blanket back over her.

"Okay then, so what did happen next?" Opal asks.

"Not much else happened that day," Cassandra says. "Vex waited with me for the guys to come back. I rewrote my letter to Rapunzel and Eugene, then sent Owl off to deliver it for me."

"I remember getting that letter," Rapunzel says. "But it wasn't the only correspondence we received that day..."

The festivities have finally wound down. Today has been full of joy, celebration, and lots of cake. A much-needed distraction from recent events.

But now that the day has come to a close, Rapunzel finds herself where she has every night since the strange attack... In bed, crying into her pillow.

Eugene hobbles over to her side of the bed, still needing to use a crutch ever since he broke his leg during his trip to the Dark Kingdom. He sits next to her, rubbing her shoulder in silence. He had hoped maybe tonight would be different, after having celebrated their anniversary. But his wife is still distraught over having lost the ability to conceive children, and he doesn't know what to do to comfort her. He hasn't even had the sufficient time to properly contemplate his own feelings on the subject. He just spends his nights doing what he can to soothe her. But as desperately as he tries, nothing seems to be enough.

At least her crying has lightened up, somewhat. When he first returned home and she gave him the news, she sobbed so loudly each night that her cries echoed through the castle hallways. Now, while she still sheds many tears, her cries are softer but still heart-wrenching. He can only stay by her side, offering whatever comfort his presence may give until she relaxes enough to fall asleep.
