•Amour Maternelle By Alix Beaujour•

i stare and admire the painting in front of me
Amour Maternelle by Alix Beaujour
he painted a picture of a black mother holding her black son in her arms
the son looks quite distressed which i'm sure all black boys are
another magnificent painting by Alix
of how he captures us women in our roles that we play on this earth
what's going through the young boys mind ?
what's going through the mothers mind ?
maybe a concept on how she can protect her son from the worlds evilness
or possibly give him a reason on why black boys cant live a normal life like other boys of other races
he wants to know why his mother is so protective over him
he doesn't get why he can't cry sometimes
whenever he does, he gets put down and told
"no, we don't cry"
he just wants to play
and she just wants to have her son live another day
he just wants to be a kid
but she wants to teach her son how to be a strong black man
wish they could go hand in hand
but in reality
we have to protect and watch over, our black boys

*this poem was inspired by a creative writing assignment. We had to write a poem about a painting we saw and liked. Look it up if you can! Fun fact, my teacher (who was white) called me out bc she didn't like how I made it "about race." But if you see the painting, you'll see for yourself 😭😂
