Percy knew they arrived when the car rolled slowly to a stop. He almost fell asleep during the drive, something that was strange since he was with someone he just met. But Happy seemed like a good man, a trustworthy man. Said man opened the car door and Percy was immediately calmed by the scent of the sea. He could feel a large body of water nearby and it did a number on his nerves. He didn't realize he was nervous until that moment. Percy told his mother and Annabeth that he didn't care whether the Avengers liked him, he was here for a part-time job, the money, not friends. Annabeth was able to see straight through what he now knew was a lie.
He sensed a person coming before he heard them. "Agent Fury." Happy said, helpfully.
"Thank you for getting him here safely, Hogan." He stopped in front of Percy.
"Whatever you are paying Mr. Hogan is not enough." Percy felt like he needed to add. He heard Happy chuckle behind him.
"So I've heard." Fury grumbled. "Anyway, welcome to the Avenger's Compound in Upstate New York."
"I know where we are." Percy gestured to the body of water. "The Hudson River is right there." Percy felt that familiar and comforting feeling of the water pulling him towards it.
"Right. Water god kid." Percy whipped his head in the direction of Fury's voice.
"God of the Sea." Percy corrected. His father hasn't spoken to Percy in over 4 months and he really didn't want the first interaction from him to be anger. But Fury just hummed and Percy heard him walking away, presumably into the compound so he followed with his walking stick and backpack.
"Today we will only be doing introductions but if you feel like sparing we can arrange that." Percy didn't like how Fury's voice suggested sparing like it was something Percy was waiting to hear. "Most of the original members are here. Thor is not here because of what you told us about you getting into trouble." Percy's nerves continued to loosen as he walked through the compound. It smelt clean and it was warm. He could feel the few breezes from open windows, letting the cool autumn air in. "Everyone is upstairs in the common area."
"Are their stairs?" Percy asked.
"Yes. If you prefer to use the stairs I'll show you the way." Percy had the sense that Fury dealt with difficult people often. He counted the steps as he ascended. When he got to twenty, his stick didn't stop at anything letting him know they were finally on the second floor. The stick wasn't the only teller of his arrival. Percy could hear multiple people moving around and talking from ahead. He followed the sound of Fury's footsteps into what he guessed was the common area, towards the voices.
"Ah! You must be Percy!" A voice said. Percy heard someone come up to him and lightly tapped his stick. "My name is Dr. Bruce Banner, but you can call me Bruce." Percy immediately liked Bruce. "If you'd like to follow me a few steps more into the common area so everyone can meet you and you can sit if you'd like." Percy knew why he was doctor. His voice was soothing and strong, like he knew exactly what he was talking about all of the time. Percy thought Dr. Banner's patients must be lucky. Bruce lead Percy to a couch but he didn't sit. He could feel that everyone was standing and Percy didn't want to be at a disadvantage. "Everyone this is Percy, the new recruit Fury was telling us about."
"Percy," He remembered that voice from the visit to his apartment. He also remembered the quick moving blood in his body. But what was strange was that another person in the room had similar moving blood. "Nice to see you again, but I don't think we were formally introduced. I'm Steve." Percy nodded but glanced in the direction of the person with similar blood. He must have seem him looking because the next voice was from that direction.
"I'm Bucky." Percy also noticed that Bucky's blood flow didn't go to his left arm. It was same sense as Percy could tell the blood flow didn't go into Annabeth's missing foot. This Bucky person must be missing his arm.
"Were you also injected with that serum?" Percy asked before he could stop himself.
"Uh, yeah, now did you know?" Percy immediately felt guilty for asking. Bucky's voice seemed like he didn't like how Percy brought up the subject. But Percy was never known for thinking before speaking.
"You're blood feels the same as Steve's. And Steve told me about the serum he was injected with."
"I'm sorry, did you say you could feel his blood?" A new voice asked. Percy rubbed the back of his neck with one hand.
"Yeah, I can feel and control practically any liquid." Percy explained. The people in the room when quiet for a moment before the same unnamed voice spoke again.
"Amazing." It said. "So you can control blood?" Percy felt his stomach drop and a shiver went through his body despite the warm air.
"Theoretically. But my main thing is water." Percy almost regretted bringing up blood. "And you are...?" Percy asked.
"Tony Stark." Tony said his name like he was waiting for a reaction. But the name did sound familiar to Percy. Then it clicked. Percy snapped his fingers.
"You're the one with the ugly building in the city." Tony scoffed.
"And how would you know?" Suddenly multiple voices began shouting.
"Tony!"
"I'm so sorry Percy!"
"Dude, really?"
"I haven't always been blind, you know." Percy said loudly to get everyone's attention. "And plus, my girlfriend is an architect, she criticizes every building she sees that wasn't designed by herself." As much as Percy loves Annabeth, if he had to hear one more time about the unsymmetrical design of Stark Tower, he was going to lose it.
"Why is everybody shouting?" A new voice said from a distance. Percy knew straight away two things about this person. One, he was younger. Maybe even younger than he was. The voice was masculine in the way a young boy was and he seemed to be eating something as he walked and was talking with his mouthful. Percy smelt pizza. The second thing he noticed was that the person that just walked in was a demigod. More specifically, a child of Athena, like Annabeth.
Welcome back! I hope you enjoyed this chapter with the little cliffhanger! I am aware that the chapters are kind of short but I believe the story is easier to read that way.
