A NEW DOMAIN
His eyes widened, realizing they had came to a huge dusty room filled with books in shelves. Spider webs decorated every corner of the large room. "Welcome to the men's domain," the Midget introduced.
Paul got on his feet following the Midget. "It's beyond words," he marveled.
The Apexes at every darkness caught his attention. "I know," the Midget said sniffing, walking over to one of the desks before the shelves. "It was a pity I could not read."
The Midget pulled an oil lamp from the corner of the room and moved to the dusty desk. He placed it on the desk, causing the dust to rise in the air. Paul shifted his eyes back onto the Midget.
"All my collection had gone to waste," it said, opening the drawer on the desk. It then pulled out a link bottle and feather. "But now I have you."
It handed Paul the ink and feather. "The one who possesses the men's skills, who could read everything for me, make me learn, make me intelligent like you men,"
Paul's eyes widened as the Midget moved past him. "I want you to clean this whole place and once you done with the response give it to my lovely Diyata," pointing at the familiar bird(the bigger one) that was seated on the shelve, staring at him.
His teeth clenched. Its presence making his skin crawl. The Midget then disappeared back down the ladder, its footsteps also fading. A sigh escaped his lips.
He opened the ink as the memory of Aunty Agnes back in the orphanage visited his head, after so many years.
Her skinny hands had held the feather and dipped it inside the ink. "Everyone can still see?" she had asked.
"Yes, Aunty Agnes," everyone had replied, in unison.
"Good, now we start Jotting on the piece of paper," she had said, jotting on the piece of paper before showing them.
"Wow," they had all said in unison.
"I want to try it!" Adam had yelled.
"I want to learn maps," Helen had argued.
"Helen is right," Delta had added. "Maps are fun."
A deep sigh had escaped Aunty Agnes dry lips. "Children we should understand that to learn anything we should know how to read and write first," she had said.
The full stop at the end of his sentence brought him back to the real world. He carefully folded the piece of paper and turned to face the bird on the shelve. It seemed to sense him as it flew towards him. His feet moved back as the horrifying bird landed on the desk flapping its wings causing the dust to rise.
A cough escaped his lips as the bird snatched the folded piece of paper from his fingers before flying back down the ladder. His eyes stared at his fingers which were almost snatched by the strong beak.
A broom and bucket full of water suddenly slid out the shadows stopping before his feet. He lifted his head up and stared at the Apex in the shadows. It growled, "Get to work,"
Paul stoop picking both the broom and steel bucket. He then started moving towards the shelves.
