IN THE CABIN, AZMIRA
MY FAMILY
The few children sat around Aunty Agnes with their legs crossed, their eyes widened full of fascination. “A place where they lived happily ever after,” closing the book.
Helen rose her hand up. “Yes Helen,”
“Why did the bear want to eat the children?”
“Because it was a bad bear and that is why Peter and Glan had to set a trap for it,” Aunty Agnes replied.
Thomas rose his hand.
“Yes Thomas,”
“Did the bear ever change?”
“It died,” Delta said.
“Delta,” Agnes said.
“It did die, no one could survive being inside a pot with boiling water,” Delta defended himself.
“Die? The fury bear died?” one of the children with long auburn hair asked holding her teddy bear doll close to her chest, tears clouded in her eyes.
“Yes, the bear did die Zoe but his soul went to Paradise where it apologized to the children and become friends with the children, where they all lived happily ever after,”
“Paradise?” Delta asked.
Agnes nodded. “Yes, Paradise,” pulling out a map from her file with thousand papers sticking out. “A place where all children live happily and play forever.” pointing at a land marked with a coal.
“I want to go to paradise,” Helen said, sounding a little excited.
“Are you going to take us there, Aunty Agnes?” Paul asked his eyes on crawling Pamela who was chasing a bug.
A deep sigh escaped Aunty Agnes’s lips, picking Pamela up who giggled. “Please,” they all said.
“Okay,” making Pamela sit on her left lap snice she had another boy baby sleeping on her right lap.
“Yey!” they all cheered.
“Shh,” Agnes said trying to keep them down.
Mother Theresa’s footsteps caught everyone’s ears as everyone quickly got up hiding the books and taking some brooms some getting on their knees scrubbing the floor. Aunty Agnes quickly shoved the two babies under the table and folded the map shoving it inside her file then got on her knees scrubbing the floor.
Mother Theresa appeared from the door with a man with long dark hair styled into a low ponytail, hanging his dark coat on his arm and fedora. “Everyone up!” he called out. Everyone quickly got up, standing in a line. “Which one would you like?” turning to face the man beside her.
His dark eyes slowly opened. Sight of a foreign small cabin made from logs came to his view. “You are awake,” William said.
He turned to face William who was seated on the wooden chair, stitching the last line on his arm. His dark T-shirt sleeve folded twice, revealing his hairy arm.
“Paul is awake!” Anna yelled in joy, running toward the bed.
Her coat off. She had a dark green dress with peter pan collars paired with classic Mary Janes and white ankle socks on.
“Don’t touch him Anna,” William said, putting the needle inside a bowl with the rest of the thousand bloody cotton wools.
“He’s hurt?”
“Yes Anna, he’s hurt,” pulling the bandage and started rolling it around his arm. Paul grimaced through the pain.
“You’ll be fine,” William assured him.
Paul nodded, his eyes on Charles and Hector who had emerged from under the bed. Both had their coats off. They had white shirts, cross belt grey pants and their boots on.
“Done,” William said getting up.
Paul glanced at his arm, which was bandaged. “Thank you,”
William nodded. “You are welcome,” moving toward the small fireplace where Jack was lying a few distance from it with the basket beside him. Barefoot, no coat on or poor boy cap, just him in his loose cream shirt and pants that also revealed his ankles like his. His right hand on the basket, rocking it. A shot gun lying beside him.
“Sir Will,” Paul called out for the first time.
William immediately stopped moving and turned to face Paul who was running his uninjured arm inside his pants pocket. “I want you to have it,” heading him the folded map.
William rose an eyebrow placing the bowl with bloody cotton wools and bandages on the edge of the small bed and reached his hand, taking the map from Paul’s hand. “I heard you can read maps,”
William stared at the map, he had unfolded. “What is that?” Anna asked looking up at William.
“A map to paradise?” William’s voice sounded shaky, shifting his eyes off the map onto Paul.
Paul nodded. “I think it’ best you have it, my journey with you has come to an end, Owlet woods is a few distance from here and I shall walk there,”
“Now?” Charles asked, his eyes wide open.
“Yes, if I am to reach the mountain of Bones before the third day of no moon, I will have to set off now,”
“Alone?” Anna asked.
“You can’t do that,” Hector argued.
“You will not make it,” Jack said sitting upright.
“Jack is right, you’ll need to first get that wound healed before setting out into a place filled with creatures and predators,” William finally spoke.
“I ca…”
“No Paul, you need to rest at least you’ll set off tomorrow and well drop you off like we promised,” William said. “You have to trust us in this one,”
The door clicked open as Barbara entered carrying a few chopped woods and an axe. She shut the door behind her and turned to face the tensed crowd.
