ALMOST THERE
The Apex led him down the dark hallway. Paul slid his hand inside his pant’s pocket. He pulled out a crunchy bread wrap with a cloth. They walked past a steel door as he got on his knee. “Umm,” he groaned, secretly sliding the cloth underneath the door.
The Apex growled angrily, “Get up!”
“My apologies my leg failed me,” getting up.
The corner of his eyes, seeing the bread slid deeper and a shadow stood behind the close door with a few locks. He followed the Apex inside a nearby door which was similar to the steel one.
It opened and Paul walked inside, not resisting. It slammed the door close, the sound of locks turning filling his ears. A sigh left his lips, looking around the dark room around him. His big bare feet moved forward, on the cold concrete floor.
The room was hollow, nothing, beside a greasy mattress was lying on the left side of the room, with an old grey loose blanket on it, small round window at the top, further from his reach, letting in shadows of the dark night.
He walked towards the mattress, taking a seat on it. A sigh left his lips. He was exhausted. The sudden banging sound on the wall, caught his attention. He turned to face the wall and looked through the small hole he was able to grill using a 30cm sharp steel rod he had found a year ago while cleaning in one of the chambers.
A familiar bright black eye appeared from the other side. “Pam,” he mumbled, banging on the wall the similar rhythm they had been using for two years, when checking on each other.
She also banged twice on the wall, Paul understanding what she was saying
Thank you for the bread
A sad smile curled from Paul’s lips, also banging on the wall once.
You welcome
Pamela banged five times on the wall.
Your nightmares are getting worse
Paul’s eyes widened, staring straight at her sister’s eyes. She banged three times again.
I hear you every night and I feel your heart pounding faster before dying out, like you die in your sleep.
Paul moved his eye away from the hole and banged twice.
Don’t worry about me I am fine.
There was silence after that. Paul pulled up the corner of the mattress, revealing thirty squares that were drawn on the floor, each with a different moon. From full moon to no moon on the twenty-eight to day thirty. From day one to day twenty-five were marked out.
“Almost there,” he whispered, pulling the folded piece of paper that was near the steel rod. A steel rod that was placed inside the last square.
He carefully placed the mattress back, covering the thirty squares. He sat comfortably on the mattress, unfolding the piece of paper which was his map. He stared at it, running his hand from one point written; Woods of Claymore down towards a point marked; The black river.
The sound of the Apex footsteps, suddenly caught his attention, rapidly he folded the map and shoved it underneath the mattress. A rectangular space at the far end of the door opened, letting in an enamel plate and mug.
It then closed. His meal was served. He quickly got up and walked towards the door, the chains on his legs rattling. He picked the plate and mug and headed back to his mattress. There was crunchy dry bread on the plate and a bug soap in the mug.
He dug his hands through the crunchy dry bread, guzzling it. He left a little piece, for his sister. He then tore his loose shirt at the edge and wrapped the bread inside it.

Loud giggles filled the narrow passage he was making a run on. The floor suddenly turned to water drowning him inside. Pamela’s scream entered his ears sharply. The clocks arms spinning crazily.
His eyes opened, gasps leaving his lips. Sweat running his forehead. Slowly his tensed body started relaxing. The banging sound which he knows belonged to Pamela caught his attention. She banged four times on the wall.
Paul! Are you okay?
He took in a deep breath. He slowly moved his trembling hand towards the wall and banged twice on the wall.
Don’t worry about me I am fine
The sound of the Apex opening the door from Pamela’s room filled his ears. His forehead wrinkling. Her foot steps and chains rattling fading after the sound of the door being slammed close had filled his ears. She was gone.
His door suddenly clicked opened. He quickly got on his feet and walked towards the Apex. A steel bucket was slid towards him. He took it and followed the Apex out, up the endless hallway,
His eyes suddenly caught the sight of the stuck of keys peeping out the Apex’s coat. The Apex stopped walking. His eyes lifted realizing a second Apex had appeared before the first one.
The second Apex glanced at Paul then back at the fist Apex then growled, “Come,”
Paul moved past the first Apex and followed the second Apex.
