IF I COULD TURN BACK THE CLOCK
Barbara moved back to near the fire place, taking off her sweater and placing it over Jack who was pretending to be asleep. She then sat near him, staring at the flames, her hand on the basket.
Jack’s eyes shut, desperate to sleep now, instead he slowly revived a memory he had marked to keep buried deep.
The young woman with long silver hair plaited into a regular braid walked over the black mark, carrying a two-year-old girl on her back, while her shoulders held two big bags. The two-year-old girl also had silver hair, but hers plaited into twin fishtail. Five-year-old Jack followed the woman who he knew as his mother.
He also had a big bag on his back, carrying a sack filled with coins in his tiny hands. “I’m tired,” he complained.
“Just hold on a little Jack, we are almost there,”
“I’m hungry,” the two-year-old girl on her back also complained.
A sigh escaped the woman’s lips as she stopped walking, so did Jack. She placed the girl toddler on the ground, pulling out a dry baked bread from her big jacket made from sheep skin. She broke it into half, handing it to Jack and the girl. “There,”
They both took the bread from her bony hands. “Now eat,” brushing both their hair.
Jack eye suddenly caught something, standing behind the tree a few distance from them. “Mum look,” pointing at the 7 feet man lurking behind the tree.
His mother turned and immediately turned cold. “Come,” picking up the girl and held Jack who was behind her by his hand. “Stay in the trail,”
Moving faster up the trails. “More mummy,” the girl said pointing at the more men lurking in the trees beside them.
She realized one was lying just in front of their trail, blocking their way. They all had no eyes nor ears. Their huge body hung in open, nothing covering them. “Remember when I told you about the dangerous Cannibals who detect their preys by smell?”
“The one that feed on men?” Jack asked.
The woman nodded placing the two-year-old girl on the ground. “Yes, those one,”
“Are these them?” the girl asked.
“Yes, and I need you two to run on the trails are we clear?” pulling out a garden axe handing it to Paul. “Protect your little sister Jill.”
Tears clouded in her eyes, while pulling out a shot gun from her coat.
“Mum…”
“You keep heading north, until you get to a village, there you shall ask for Robin Alid and tell him Valerie sent you.”
“Are you not coming mummy?” the Jill asked.
She shook her head, ‘No’
“Not this time honey,” kissing her forehead and also Jack’s fore head.
“Mum please come with us,” Jack begged holding on her arm. “Please.”
“I love, both of you,” moving her hands away from both their faces. “Now go,” staring at the cannibals slowly getting up while sniffing. “But mu...”
“Now Jack!”
The door knock pulled him back to the present. Barbara got up heading toward the door. Paul’s eyes clicked open as the smell of unfamiliar men filled his nose. “Men,”
Barbara opened the door, her eyes widened. “Miss. Barbara!” Jack yelled getting on his feet, pulling the shot gun beside him.
