"So tell me, how's life, my love?"
A presentable-looking man in an elegant suit was sitting opposite Elena. Black hair, in some places silvered with gray, did not make him older, but rather gave him luster. Elena had once admired him and thought she loved him. It was hardly love, of course, but the feelings were definitely there.
"Everything is fine" She replied, smiling politely and cutting off a piece of filet mignon. "I got a job at the college, as you know".
"Yes" Greg hummed, and put foie gras on the tip of his fork into his mouth. "Only I don't understand why. You had such prospects".
"It is necessary. I'm applying for the adoption of Kamilla".
The man even froze for a moment with his glass of wine.
"Really? You've made up your mind, haven't you?"
"I never thought I'd do otherwise. I never would have left her in that place".
"Well, good for you. If you need any help, let me know. You know, money or something".
"No, thank you" Elena shook her head, "I'll take care of everything myself. Ira advised me to get married, as it would be faster to get the consent, but I hope we can avoid it" She smiled and took a sip of cabernet from the glass.
"Really?" Greg laughed. "Thanks for the advice.. "
" It's not an advice, Gregory. Better tell me, how is your business? "
Pride and willingness to share the achieved shone in men's eyes.
"You know, it's great! The sponsors were found surprisingly quickly. Not without difficulties, of course. I'm setting up production, but I wasn't looking for an easy way. It was not a game of monopoly, I knew what I was going to do".
Elena nodded and Greg continued his story about England. It is strange, but after twenty minutes or so she caught herself that she had lost the thread of his lively narration.
Instead of listening about the investors her ex-boyfriend had been telling her about, for some reason she was replaying in her head Andrew's words about the fact that she drove him crazy. A herd of goosebumps crawled up her body, and the heat between her legs was relentless. God, how could she get rid of this obsession? The boy had been on her mind more and more lately, and somehow it seemed that there was more to her than just physiology.
Ledger was unlike any of her lovers, and her body must have demanded to discover new horizons. Nonsense, of course. It was doubtful that she would fall for a guy's words like that just because she wanted to sleep with him. There was definitely something else going on here.
Elena looked intently at Gregory. Handsome, statuesque, self-sufficient. He had always been for her an example of what a man should be. It was easy to tie one's life to him and feel like a stone wall. That's the kind of husband every girl dreams of. He would solve any problem in no time, dating only in the most expensive restaurants, just like now. Elena never understood this pretentiousness, but Greg preferred only such places. Polite, well-mannered, reserved, gallant. A rock, behind which nothing is scary... Except that she was looking at him, and nothing was happening. There was no burning inside. There was no clicking, no sparks flying in all directions, like from a welding.
They spent about an hour and a half in the restaurant. They shared the events of the past six months, and then the girl, claiming fatigue, said she was going home. Greg drove her to the college, and after getting into her Daewoo, Elena headed home.
At one of the traffic lights she stopped and felt her palms digging into the steering wheel. Her body was literally pulled into a tight rope. Peering through the windshield, she could not take her eyes off the oncoming white Ferrari, driven by Ledger, smiling happily. Next to him was a pretty, spectacular blonde in an expensive vest.
