The next day Elena did not know what to expect. After yesterday's call from Andrew, she did not understand what was going on with him at all. At first Ledger, shouting over the music, yelled that he hated her. Then that he would kill her if he found out that she was with Greg, and then he just kept quiet on the phone for five minutes. She could hear his heavy breathing, the loud music, but she could not hang up. She herself did not understand why she continued to stand like a stone and look at the night city from the apartment window, just listening to his uncontrollable breaths and exhalations.
Strangely, but she wished that he would suddenly sneak away, come and see that she was alone. No Greg around. And it was not physiology at all. Only the problem was that it was on the verge of impossible to believe the words of a guy who had sworn just a short time ago that he would kick her out of the college in every possible way. She wasn't allowed to screw up. Any misstep would be a roadblock to Kami. And though her whole being demanded to believe, her brain stubbornly insisted that such a cold-blooded animal as Ledger could not be trusted.
Elena taught her classes, flinching every time the door opened, but Andrew never showed up. There was a swimming competition scheduled for four o'clock today at the pool, and he was probably getting ready. The hope of the college. Pride. The coach expected him to live up to expectations. Everyone would go to support their team, because others would come.
After the last class, she decided to sit in the auditorium for a while - to check the essays of the sophomores, so as not to take them home. When the time was approaching four, she decided that it was time to leave. She couldn't take another meeting with Ledger.
Elena took her notebooks to the Department, took her cardigan off the hanger, and, after saying goodbye to the professors, went to the stairs. A crowd of students was just coming downstairs, carrying posters with the name of the college team - "Sharks". Elena waited until the cheering crowd had passed, and was about to go down the stairs when she heard from behind her:
"Elena?"
She turned around and froze. Right in front of her was the same girl Andrew had taken in the car the other day. She looked even prettier up close. Elena even thought these two looked like each other.
"Yes. Can I help you?"
The blonde held out her hand and smiled warmly.
"Hello, my name is Mila. Mila Ledger. I would like to talk to you, if it's possible".
From surprise Elena did not immediately realize that the polite thing to do was to shake hands in response. Sister? She only realized it after a second, and nodded, feeling as if for some reason the stone that pressed on her chest was crumbling to pieces.
"Yes, of course. We can go into the auditorium".
Closing the door behind her, Elena took a seat at the table and Mila at the first desk. The girl kept looking at the teacher unashamedly. The young lecturer even felt uncomfortable with this kind of curiosity.
"What did you want to talk to me about, Mila?" Elena asked, folding her hands into a lock. She was uncomfortable. Why would Andrew's sister come to her?
"About Andrew".
"And what about him?"
The girl opened her purse, took out a piece of paper and put it in front of Elena. She silently unfolded it and gasped. A picture of her and Andrew. God, what is it?
Her memory frantically searched for an answer to the question of when such a thing could have happened, and immediately found it. That night after pool. Judging by the beige blouse. And they'd only been in his car once, that night. Were they kissing? And why is this on camera?
