Andrew turned and walked out, leaving Helena alone. A chill went through the girl. The documents in her hands trembled. Joy mixed with a range of emotions attacked her consciousness. She laughed through her tears, rereading again and again the document about becoming Kamilla's official guardian, then grabbed her purse and hurried downstairs. Elena called Greg and explained the situation, and then she and Ira went to see Mrs. Pashinsky. After the official confirmation she drove to the orphanage and made Kamilla happy. The girl blushed and rushed to pack her things. And when they were walking happily down the corridor to the exit, Elena passed by a boy with a small shiny thing in his hands.
She recognized the toy at once, because she had only seen one like it once in her life. It was gold-plated, in the shape of eagle's wings.
"Excuse me," she asked the teacher, who was following the boy.
"Yes?" The woman paused.
"Sorry for the indelicate question. May I ask where the boy got that spinner?"
A sympathetic smile stretched on the kind face of a middle-aged.
"Oh, it's like a miracle. A young man came here, brought a whole heap of toys, and Michael got such a funny little thing. He won't part with it now. Can you imagine?"
The girl's heart grew to an inexplicable size in her chest.
"I see, thank you."
Life began to flow in a new way. Now every morning the blue-eyed girl smiled at Lena and accompanied her to work, staying with Ira or a neighbor. The apartment had also changed. Kami had few toys, but now there was a soul in the house. A soul able to laugh and raise the mood with a warm smile. For three days they had settled in, and the following week Elena was going to apply to the school. She hadn't done it before, because for some inexplicable reason she had been putting off this step. Andrew's last words were keeping her awake. The girl tried to call him, but the subscriber was unavailable. She went to the Ledgers' house and to his apartment, but she could find him neither there nor there.
The strange feeling, as if Elena was waiting for something, became clear only on Monday after the first class. Her attention was caught by several students chatting by the window. The last name Ledger was heard several times. The girl went to the window and stopped breathing when she saw the painfully familiar white Ferrari below and Andrew crouched on the hood. He was leaning against it, lazily playing with a toothpick. Nathan stood next to him and said something, but Elena looked only at Andrew. He was wearing sunglasses, for today the autumn sun had decided to indulge the earth in warm rays. The students tried to understand what he came for, because he took the documents a week ago, and Elena watched her beloved and felt the butterflies in her stomach come to life and fly away - right there, to her arrogant insolent young man. She was waiting for him. Elena understood that now. All these days she'd been waiting for her personal savior to show up, and Andrew did.
She turned around, quickly grabbed her purse, and almost ran down to the first floor. She stepped outside and walked toward him.
Andrew felt her. Turned his eyes to the main entrance. Elena was walking to meet him. Again with her tail tightened on the back of her head. He threw out his toothpick, straightened up. Shoving his hands in his pockets, he took a few steps toward the girl.
The couple stopped in front of each other, silently absorbing each other's emotions. Andrew deliberately didn't come for a few days. She said she needed to make the decision herself, without his direct involvement. Okay. It was problematic, of course, to endure so many days without snapping at her, and this morning he couldn't stand it. Enough. He gave her too much freedom. No, Andrew did not want to control and meddle in her life anymore, but he could not give up his habits right away. That was just the way he was. Maybe, with time, he would change, and maybe not. After all, this was not just another woman in his way. It was Elena. His obsession. A girl who had sneaked into his heart and nestled in it.
