(The Sinless Soldier)

"I would have never thought a mysterious presence would make the thrill in my body burn again."

:—————:

I found myself walking down a corridor with my arms crossed over my chest. I wasn't pleased with anything at the moment, not to mention the Shitty feeling of a pulsating heart in my ankle throbbing as I took every fucking step to Erwin's office.

The expedition was a complete shit-show. Everything went to hell out there. I lost my entire squad.
Oluo, Gunther, Eld, and Petra...
I watched as the bodies of my comrades fall onto the ground in a way of an escape from other's stupidity.

Why can't people just leave things alone? Why tamper with people's fates? Why bother saving others when you know you can't do anything but watch. Why risk your other friends in meeting the same death?

'Fuck this all' I thought, wanting to throw myself out the window instead of meeting with Erwin for whatever reason he called for.

Knocking on Erwin's door twice I didn't bother to listen to his usual 'Name and Business'. I simply barged in with the same stoic expression plastered on my pale face.

I watched him closely as he examined my limping stride. My ankle wasn't in the worst condition, but it wasn't in the best either.

"How is your ankle doing?" I sighed.

Erwin has asked me the same question over and over this past week, and I can no longer stand answering with the same old answer 'Fine'.

"Why did you call me here?" Ignoring his question all together I got straight to the point, since I'm beginning to grow impatient already. Drawing out a long sigh from Erwin's mouth, he cleared his throat. A low expression settling onto his face.

"Did you recall during the expedition seeing a Scout with their hood up?" Asked Erwin. Reviewing my memory from the horrible events that unraveled I didn't recall seeing a Scout with their hoods up at all times, except the one person who turned into a titan.

"No, only the titan shifter in the forest." I answered, getting no reaction from Erwin's face.

What is he trying to play at? Is a Scout with their hood up of any importance right now? Because we definitely have better things to discuss than that.

A heavy click was released with silence following behind. "Levi," I quirked a brow. "Their back."

My face contorted from Erwin's vague words.

"Who's back?" I needed clarification, saying 'Their back' gives me nothing to go off of.

"The soldier with no identity." My face instantly relaxed, but I felt a smirk urging to lace my lips from this thrilling information. Erwin furrowed his thick blonde eyebrows signaling me this wasn't a good thing.

I know all the stories behind the Soldier with no identity or to put it simple the 'Faceless Soldier'. They've come in and out of expeditions ranging from 6 years ago, and after 2 years of absence, they've made yet another appearance.

About 2 and a half years ago before this Soldier disappeared, I was so close to revealing this Soldiers identity, but the grim weather and my own lack of understanding about this soldier's skills led me nowhere, my ignorance is what stopped me from achieving it. I was furious when I came back to headquarters, they have always been such a mystery to me, and I hated it.

I hate mysterious people.

I would do anything to find out who this person is and why they're helping us in the way they are. I would chase them down until their cornered, defenseless against me, with no room to move without an answer. If push comes to shove, I'll tie them up.

"Isn't that a good thing?" I ask.

"No, it's not." Erwin's voice was low.

"How come? They are the reason we don't suffer an extraordinary number of casualties." I complained rather calmly, but eager to know why he thinks it's such a bad thing.

"They are also the reason why the Military Police have been involved with the Scouts for so long. This 'Faceless Soldier' isn't documented into the system which makes them a suspect to crimes that happened in the past against Scouts and civilians."

I did agree with Erwin on his statement, however without the assistance of this soldier, we could have lost an even greater amount without them. Despite the similarities in crimes that have happened over the course of 6 years, their help has brought us less grief to our cadets.

"How many Scouts have died with slit throats?" I asked, my voice numb and straight.

"That are documented...Six."

"And how many have died due to the titans?" Asking another question revolving around death.
Erwin was getting my point rather quickly.

"Over 200."

"Do you know the exact number, Erwin?" He shook his head, blue eyes peering into mine.

"297 Scouts have been killed by titans, only 6 with slit throats. The MPs creeping up our asses is stupid and a waste of their time, even if some civilians are ending up with slit throats doesn't mean the same person is inflicting it." I summarized my statement rather unprofessionally, but I don't care.

It's still not firmly concluded as to why we collected dead Scouts with perfectly clean slit throats during our former missions, but it never came up in bigger discussions until the fourth one was documented. All the higher ups were gathered and spoken to, to ensure they had eyes on all their cadets.

But the thing is, why would other cadets have the motive to kill their comrades when death lurks upon them every time, they step foot outside the walls. It seems pointless to go through the path of getting your hands stained with the blood of someone else.

This was all contradicting when we looked through the documented reports of our mission and saw that the death toll decreased by tremendous amounts.
This peeked everyone's attention, to the point we went around headquarters gathering more information from our Scouts.

We never got a solid answer from anyone, except one Scouts. She never spoke to anyone but this one cadet who was one of the victims whose necks got severed. She spoke of a Scout whose cloak was twice maybe three times the size of them with their hood entirely up, their face was covered completely by the green fabric.

She stated that it was difficult to differentiate whether the Scout was a man or a woman, but that didn't matter to her when she saw her friends neck get severed with a blade. Her friend's face was struck with fear before the life was drained from his neck. She wondered what he had to see that made his eyes lock with fear.

"I would be lying if I said I didn't agree with you. This Soldier holds great skills, it's a shame they don't work directly with us." I listened closely. So, Erwin does agree with me, but he's still more worried about the MPs being on our asses, rather than catching this 'Faceless Soldier' and actually getting answers rather than guesses and hypothetical facts.

"Why don't we make that our next priority?" I ask.

"You want to seize this Soldier, Levi?" Erwin's voice was compelled to my request. We've had a discussion similar to this a few years back and everyone stated that seizing them was impossible.

They've never seen them; they've never seen what they can do. But I have, and I'm sure my abilities are more than capable of taking them down this time.

"Yes, I do."
