CHAPTER FORTY-TWO
THE RULES OF LORENZO
SAVANNAH, GEORGIA"Baby?"
My voice was delicate and weak as I walked into Lorenzo's room. I spotted him looking outside his large manor while taking a sip of the drink that he poured from the bar. I made my way over and wrapped my arms around him. He wasn't crying but I could tell he was very upset. Together, we looked outside the window and it was therapeutic.
"You're not a disappointing son and you don't bring shame. Period,"
"Raquel—,"
"No, I'm serious. You can't keep talking about yourself like this. You are Lorenzo Maxwell. You're a professional boxer who just beat a man twice your size a month ago while still juggling school. Nothing about you is disappointing," I said, furrowing my eyebrows together. Why would he ever think he was a disappointment? He was so special to me and I didn't like how he would label himself.
"You are so amazing and it breaks my heart that you don't think that. Now, you're getting me angry," I said, pushing his hands off me and sitting on the bed. He followed me and sat on my left. I crossed my arms, subtly turning to face another direction.
"I'm sorry. I'll start to think positively about myself," He said, placing his hand on my thigh. I nodded, and a sigh escaped from him. "I just wanted to do something exciting. I didn't ever think the fucking police would find out about the fights,"
"There are other ways we can have fun like... a date," I assured, causing him to narrow his eyes. "A date?"
"Yeah. It'll be fun. We could eat all the food we wanted and talk about anything," I said and he pulled me into his lap. "Okay, I'll take you on a date,"
"And then that's where you'll kiss me," I said, referring to the time in the dinner when we were kids. His eyes slightly widened and his eyebrows raised. "You remember?"
"I remember," I nodded, causing a smile to appear on his face.
We decided it was time for bed. After brushing our teeth and changing, we made our way to the bed. Shortly after, I decided I needed some water from the kitchen.
I walked around the manor which was dark since everyone had gone to bed now. I opened one of the fridges and pulled out a water bottle but before I could travel back upstairs, I heard a couple of voices coming from the hallway.
"You are very hard on him,"
There were footsteps as well and I moved behind a wall in the darkness. Reid and Diana walked together towards his office. I know I should walk back to Lorenzo's room but something prompted me to stay there.
