"You're right." Godphrey says. "I was never born human. I grew up before humans even existed, actually, with my elder brother Godpheus. He and I always shared a passion for science, especially biology. We had a normal Laquanian childhood, but when I settled down, found a mate and had a child of my own, Godpheus holed himself away with his theories of creating new species and even changing Laquanian DNA. I didn't want my family involved in his schemes, so I only ever told my wife about my true identity. To everyone else, including my son and close friends, I was known as Alexander Calder. Not even Godpheus himself knew about my name change.

"When my son turned twelve, Laquania was at war in Piecena..." He hesitates, blushing. "Do you even know about The Great Laquanian War?"

My head snaps up at the question and unlike most other circumstances, I nod, recognizing the name after Ben had told me about what had happened to his father there when he was...

No. I mentally scold myself for even thinking such a thought. There is no way that this man, Godphrey Mathews, is related to my owner. I mean- they don't even look alike, with Ben's blonde hair and blue eyes, and Godphrey's oily brown hair and brown eyes. I would have noticed similarities like that, surely. Hundreds of Laquanians probably fought in that war. I think. It's a coincidence, nothing more.

"Oh, great! I don't have to explain it all." Godphrey says in obvious relief, before confusion crosses his features. "Were you taught Laquanian history in the pet institute, or something?"

I shake my head. "My owner's father was a soldier there."

The human frowns. "Huh? Well, that's unfortunate. All of the men living in Meridia were invited to fight for their country. At the time, I worked as a medical professor for university students, but decided that I would enlist as a soldier for the Southern Army. My mate and son were supportive of my decision, but, like most families, they knew that there was a possibility that I wouldn't return from the battlefield. Even Godpheus and I argued about my joining the war. Believe it or not, he still cared for me deep down, and didn't want his little brother signing up for something he didn't understand." He snickers dryly at the mention of Godpheus, but smoothes out his expression and continues.

"Anyway, I spent the next month or so as a soldier there, not yet out on the front line. I assisted in city defense, and keeping the Northern Troops out of our major territory. I saw some awful things out there and did some awful things that I'm not proud of, though in the end, it all came down to fighting for what I thought was right. But when the Northern Army marched forth with artillery far more powerful than anything we could hope to overcome, I knew that it was time for me to take to the real war.

"So, after I'd sent a letter of farewell to my family, I traveled to Piecena, and was put out on the front lines. It was nothing like the shootouts I'd been involved in before, and, since I'd only trained in defense, my technique was off, and I knew that I wouldn't last a second out there. And I didn't, because after I left the safety of our trenches, I copped a shot to the heart, and the final thing I saw was my own blood as it gushed from my uniform and onto my hands. After that, I knew that I'd been killed and it was over..."
