Even after a minute or so of catching his breath, Genesis Adam looked terrible. His face was stark white, even paler than before and his eyes were wide and fearful, the trait that most newcomers of the resistance possessed. Axel though of saying something encouraging, but his heart wasn't in it. His last comment had sparked something in the older man, and the best medicine he could offer Adam now was time. They didn't have much, but he figured this was an exception.
Wonder how old the guy really is. Axel thought absentmindedly as he surveyed Adam. He'd have been around for a century of human time, at least. The prospect of living in the one place for that long made him feel ill. Everyone knew that Adam and his mate, Genesis Eve, had been kept in Godpheus's laboratory since their creation, the only scenery they were subjected to for nearly three human lifetimes.
Rumours that the two of them had their memories under constant surveillance, and with the click of a button, their master would erase the information his pets didn't need to know about. It made Axel wonder just how many times the human kneeling beside him had had his mind chipped at until everything that had happened to him in the past was completely destroyed. Just thinking about that kind of torture was nerve-racking.
With a disgruntled sigh, he got to his feet, eyeing the gap in the bin. "We should get moving."
"Right."
The two of them squeezed back outside into the expanse of the mall with Axel in front. His right hand gripped the hilt of his pin sword as he checked left and right for any giant onlookers. None of the Laquanians took them any notice, as it seemed. Their feet thundered across the marble floor as they made for the exit, though barely anyone was entering the complex. Axel shook his head. Either this was their lucky break, or whatever had troubled the Laquanians before had intensified. It made him desperate to find out what had happened.
"We're headed in that direction." He whispered to Adam, focussing returning to their mission. He gestured down a hallway the size of an airplane hangar which carried the familiar scent of grease and cooked food. "The food court's about ten Laquanian metres from here. Our next move is pretty straight forward." This time, he pointed to another giant deck chair, roughly two metres away. At their size though, it was more like a football field. "When the coast is clear, we make a break for it and take cover under there, just like before. There's a grate just outside the fast food joint, that'll get us to where we'll find the best grub."
"And that is?" Adam hissed back.
Axel was already surveying the hallway for any gaps in the incoming crowd of giants. "There's a food storage room at the cafe there. It's got everything we'll need to take back to the base."
He motioned for the other human to get ready to run. Their path would be clear, just as soon as the two Laquanian women had strolled past...
"Go!"
Adam was faster this time around, and didn't hesitate in breaking into a sprint at the same time as he did. The Genesis still couldn't match Axel's speed, but at least the two of them were able to stick together. They scooted across the floor without any scats, slipping under the chair and out of sight.
"I've got a question for you." Adam said through gasps for breath as they continued down the new hallway.
"Shoot."
"If you have access to so much Laquanian food, then why keep using pellets?" He asked. Axel waited until they'd disappeared under a nearby stand to answer.
"The resistance base is located directly below a pet shop. We've basically got an unlimited supply of human food that can be shared around. Plus, the system means that what food we find up here can be used as payment for recruitment missions and things."
