"What are you doing?" Adam asked from his little pet cage atop Godpheus's desk. The contents of the enclosure were the generic exercise wheel, a tray of dry food and a water container, with the floor being a light sprinkle of sawdust. His mate, Genesis Eve 203998 sat beside him; the second human and first female pet ever created. Godpheus had originally informed the two that they would be sent to a breeding factory, but after their genetic makeup had caused defects in their three children, Cain, Abel and Seth, it was decided that Adam and Eve remained the scientists own pets for the rest of their days. That was all either of them remembered, anyway.

Originally, Godpheus's idea of the human pet had come from his second associate, Carter, whom neither Adam or Eve liked. He was a short, stout Laquanian who cared nothing for them. The water in their pet dish only proved that, which was tinged green with algae, and left a strange aftertaste when they drunk from it. Adam was lucky that neither of them had developed a critical illness from such desolate conditions, though sometimes, he wished that he could just slip away, rather than have his frail body subjected to any more of his master's scientific trials. It was a mental battle that the human fought with each day.

Eventually he sighed, and returned his attention to what was going on around him. The Genesis couldn't see what his master was doing from the cage's position on the opposite side of the room, but it looked important.

"Quiet, Adam." Godpheus hushed angrily after he'd spoken up, as he tinkered with what appeared to be some kind of project. Adam caught the eye of his owner as he swivelled around to face the cage. "I'm making you and Eve a bigger enclosure." The Laquanian said after a pause.

The Genesis frowned at exactly the same time as Eve, who was sitting beside him, her head leant up against his bony shoulders. White/blonde hair came down to her waist and framed his mate's stone grey eyes. Perhaps, if she was a Laquanian and not a pet, Eve would have been considered beautiful, but Adam saw it in her either way.

"Why, Master God?" He asked, confusion tainting his voice. Godpheus only smiled proudly in response.

"It was going to be a surprise, but seeing as you asked, it's your birthday present!" He told them in an excited tone that didn't match the human's dull mood in the slightest. "It's been five years since you were made, Adam!"

Adam did the maths in his head. He remembered all too clearly the day he'd woken up from what had felt like a coma, for the first time. He'd been bewildered beyond comprehension and hadn't been able to move around or speak properly for weeks. It was a hazy memory of course, though it was one the human would never forget. Only a week later had passed before Godpheus created Eve and after a year of tedious experimentation on the two Genesis humans, Eve was forced into childbirth. That was about the time that Carter had brought up the idea of the 'pets' theory.

"I never thought about it." Adam told his master sheepishly. He was leant with his shoulders slumped against the bars of his cage, his grimy black pants coated with sawdust. Two hundred and fifty human years had passed since the man had opened his eyes for the first time, and not once had he been offered a fresh change of clothes.

Godpheus waved him off with a flick of his car sized hand. "Well, you can. Now be quiet. I have work to do." He said sternly. Adam gave a single nod and said nothing in reply. Instead, he stroked Eve's soft hair with his fingertips and closed his eyes. Dreams entered his mind almost instantly...

He opened his eyes feeling weak and cold. He shivered, realising he was covered in a thick yellow gunk that coated him like slime. His vision cleared after a moment and he blinked twice to steady himself. His eyes widened slightly, as they took in the strange scenery of what would soon be known as Godpheus's lab. Adam remembered being dazed and extremely confused, to the point where his head spun. Those first few moments of his existence had been like he was living in a dream, not able to comprehend anything he saw.
