'I'm only human, and I crash and I break down. Your words in my head, knives in my heart, you build me up and then I fall apart. 'Cause I'm only human.' ~Christina Perri

~David~

Lilly expelled a gasp of shock at the sight of the dead body of the Kennel operator, her opaque eyes now a glassy and lifeless black. Her wrinkled face was twisted in pain and her hands lay over a gaping wound in her chest. Fragments of shattered glass littered the hallway from the shattered wall of the human second class holding tank. No one, human or Laquanian was in sight.

David guided his wife around the crime scene, his arm around her shoulders protectively. "Honey, cover your eyes." He instructed.

Lilly grunted under her breath, twisting out of his grip. Her opaque eyes were cold and furious. "Get off me." She snapped back, pulling her black cardigan around her body despite the humid temperature. "I know what's happened."

"It was them, Lil." David insisted, jogging to keep up with his wife as she stormed briskly down the hall away from the woman's body. "The humans. They did thi-"

Without warning, Lilly reeled around, slapping him hard across the cheek. With a faint yelp, David stumbled backwards, his prosthetic right leg doing little to balance him. He hit the far wall, clutching his face angrily.

"Don't you dare blame Charlene and Colton for this, David." Lilly hissed, her balled fists shaking as she stood over him. "They did nothing. This was my son- Our son's doing. And if you weren't so hard on him, he wouldn't have gone and done it!"

David's eyes flared in defiance. "Don't you understand?" He snapped. "These pets were meant to be killed! It's part of our president's scheme to save us all! Does that even matter to you!?"

Lilly let out a long sigh. "Of course it does, David." She said coldly. "But not as much as protecting my family. And Colton is our family now. And Ben. And Charlene. And Malroy. I trust our son. I'm sure he had every reason to do what he's done to that... woman. Right now though, all I want is for them to be safe. If this storm is going to save our race then so be it, but I would rather die than let anything happen to my family." She regarded David with an icy glare. "If you feel that way then come with me, but if not, you can get yourself a new mate!"

David frowned at his wife, but said nothing in response. Looking into her eyes, he gave her a curt nod, before continuing towards the door at the end of the narrow hallway. Shouldering open the door, he almost slammed it shut behind him at the sight of the sky. A deep purple/green/grey mass blotted out any form of blue, enveloping the bush land in shadows. Thunder crackled above, the lightning strikes dangerously close. Lilly pushed past his frozen form irritably, sprinting for the nearby hiking track.

"BEN! MALROY! COLTON!" She yelled at the top of her lungs, the whistling wind smothering her cries. David hobbled after her, unable to run with his metal leg.

"GET BACK HERE BENJAMIN!" He shouted into the bush land.

Lilly's ragged breathing could be heard in the distance as the two crashed through the leaf littered track without a single sense of direction. David could feel his heart thumping manically in his chest. Every ounce of him begged to return to the safety of the campsite, to get back into Meridia where Godpheus had issued for the humanization to occur. He hoped he and his family would make it under the radar of the storm and its powers... despite the freakishness of it all. David couldn't blame himself; Laquania hadn't had a real thunderstorm in years. But with the combination of a scientist's humanization serum? David shuddered mid-jog at the thought of turning into one of those... creatures.
