"Please." She sobbed. "My mate. He's..." Eve couldn't finish. Her hair was a mess, and matched her pain streaked face uncannily. David held her at eye level by the collar of her tiny blue shirt as he inspected her frail body. The sleeves digging into her armpits were the only thing keeping the Genesis from toppling to the ground.
"I don't give a damn about Adam. Quite frankly, I'm pissed that he escaped." David said coldly. He'd locked himself inside his study and had the windows shut, so no one could peek inside; especially Ben. He'd heard the boy leaving earlier, anyway, so as far as he could tell, it was just him and Eve home. Lilly had left for work in the early morning.
Eve stared into his cloudy white eyes, which showed a hazy reflection of her own face, like she was staring into a mirror. She let out a weak sob and hung her head, staring at David's desk which seemed hundreds of stories below her as she dangled there.
"He's all I have." She mumbled. "All I've ever had."
David would have rolled his eyes if they weren't completely opaque. With a huff of annoyance, the Laquanian shouldered off his satchel and threw it casually to the opposite site of the room. Eve flinched at the noise, which was amplified through her sensitive human ears. David dropped her onto the desk and sat down, fiddling with the hem of his black sweater for a moment.
"I want to ask you something, Eve." He said, in an eerie calm. Eve knew deep down that she shouldn't have been afraid by such threats, but without Adam it was as though a piece of her, the side that was strong in situations like this, had gone. Colour draining from her face, she took a step backward and hit the side of a pencil tin.
"W-What's that?"
"Why did you do that to me?" David's answer was immediate, rehearsed. Eve was confused by his words at first, but then realised what the Laquanian meant. He gestured to the fake leg, strapped the scarred stump that was all that remained of his old one. Eve swallowed tightly.
"I..." She couldn't bring herself to finish. All she could think about was Adam. Sure, they'd been forced into having sex and she'd fallen pregnant more than once in her lifetime, but he'd been the only one there for her. And now, she was alone.
"Answer me." David said sternly. Anger flickered in his eyes.
"I was sick of it all, David!" She snapped, anger of her own suddenly flowing from her veins. The familiar feeling of energy particles tingled at her fingertips, but she forced it back. Not yet. "Before you appeared in our cage, Godpheus ripped off my finger, and one of Adam's toes for some experiment. Adam was angry at the Laquanians for making him so small. And I... I was, too."
David's mouth was set in a hard line as he studied her. "You and Adam clawed my leg from my hip with your bare hands. Do you know what agony feels like?" His fist came out of nowhere and caught Eve like a full on truck in the stomach. Before she could so much as retaliate the Genesis was flying backwards into the pencil tin, blood spraying from her tiny nose. She didn't rise. For a moment David thought he'd killed her but she'd already propped herself back up on the desk, rubbing her face. With careful hands, she gripped the shoulder she'd dislocated on impact with the tin, and popped it back into place.
"I know what agony feels like, you piece of shit." She whispered, cocking her head to the side and successfully cracking her neck. "My master puts me through enough of it." Without another word, Eve held up her left hand for David to see. As he looked closer, he noticed that two of her fingers were missing- the pinky and middle finger. The flesh surrounding the stumps was mangled, like mashed play dough. "Didn't you hear me before when I said that Godpheus went and tore our limbs off for experimentation? Trust me, David. We are quite accustomed to pain."
