'Don't listen to a word I say. The screams all sound the same.' ~Of Monsters And Men

~Axel~

I let out a slight yelp as what feels like a seismic shock rippling off the side of the jar hurls both Cain and I backwards. In slow motion, I catch a glimpse of the confused woman as she tumbles through the air. Her eyes are wide and fearful for a fleeting moment, before she pulls herself together and spreads her wings wide to catch herself before she falls. Unfortunately for me, I don't have the luxury of flight and wind up smashing into the thick glass base of the jar, my nose cracking painfully on impact.

Instantly I'm sitting up, dazed but otherwise unharmed. Sickly golden blood flows freely from my left nostril and I grunt, trying to suck it back in. All I get is a metallic taste in my mouth which makes me gag. The pain that really should have come with my injury is nonexistent, although at this stage I can't tell whether this is from my 'mutation' of my screwed up nervous system deciding to take the day off. Either way, I'm not complaining.

"We're too late!" Cain yells, although it sounds more like a fearful sob. "Oh Godpheus he's going to kill us!"

I stagger to my feet, tilting my head up to stop the metallic blood from trickling down my face. To my surprise, the skin around my shredded nose seems to knit together, healing itself in seconds. With a numb crack, my nose slots back into place. That could come in handy... I think briefly, marveling over my accelerated healing. It doesn't last long though, because I'm instantly interrupted by Cain, as she bounds over to me, reaching out to grip my shoulders like a vice. Tears stream down her face.

"A-A-Axel... he's coming..." She whimpers, letting go of me to claw at her hair. Her wide purple eyes gleam with pain and worry.

"Hold it." I instruct, keeping a firm hold of my calm. "Who's coming? This could just be the shrinking process. The humanization, remember?"

Wrapping her wings tightly around her frail body, Cain shakes her head. She shoots me a morbid look. "We're too late, Axel. I read his mind..." A sigh escapes her pursed lips. "I should have known, I guess. Why he kept us alive. He tried so hard to block me out from his mind but..."

"What are you talking about?" I ask, narrowing my eyes.

In response, Cain only whimpers again. "We're too late." She repeats, withdrawing her gaze on me to stare up at the ceiling of the enormous jar. "It's already happening..."

Biting my lip nervously, I follow her eyes up the gritty walls of glass to the lid above, where a single tiny hole pokes through. A hole small enough to ensure that Cain can't fly through...

...But big enough to give us a full view of the bright white beam of light as it penetrates the sky. The two of us watch in horror as the jar condenses around us, beginning to shrink down to human size.
