'Underneath the skin, there's a human. Buried deep within there's a human. And despite everything, I'm still human...' ~Daughter

~Axel~
It's hard to tell whether or not my nightmares are real. In the midst of my brain I see Adam, his body completely covered in an eerie blue/white glow. I see miniature bolts of electricity pulse around him that remind me of tiny white snakes. I see his eyes... his opaque Laquanian eyes as they flash a glimpse at my fear covered face before they return to their gaze on the Pet Controllers. And then all I see is blinding, pure white light.
It takes more than a cattle prod to kill Genesis Adam 203997!
You're telling me.
All of a sudden my mind clears and the burning sensation around my eyes disappears. I feel tears prick my closed eyes as my body regains control. I brace myself for the end that should have come by now. I'm ready to die. I think I have been for years. Who knows? Maybe my soul will travel into the body of a Laquanian? I'd be accepted then.
But no. My body isn't ready to die yet. I can feel it protesting against my mind. So when I open my eyes, I know that I'm truly alive. Although, I'm not exactly at the chop shop I was sure the Pet Controllers would send me. Actually, I'm lying on my back in a cold, dark place. And the concerned faces of two humans fill my peripheral vision.
"Axel!" Waverly screams, her eyes streaming tears. She looks terrible; human clothes torn in many places to expose flesh that looks as though it's had a run in with a meat cleaver. Her arms and legs are caked with some flowing, some dried blood. But her eyes are the same. Still a gentle but piercing green. And they stare at me, just as they used to.
"Wh-" I stutter in confusion. My head throbs painfully and I have a feeling I've pulled half the muscles in my neck. It aches uncontrollably, but respectively as a human, I've been through much worse.
"Shhh, Axel." A new voice murmurs in the darkness. The familiar twig thin frame of Adam hobbles into the dull light. Adam. The man who somehow harnessed electricity. I remember everything. Adam brings his weary blue eyes up, to meet my own grey ones. "I can explain."
I feel something touch my shoulder and flinch, before realizing it's just Waverly's blood crusted hand. She smiles at me with thin lips, like an angel. I melt at her touch. "Where are we?"
"We're in the drain again." Adam replies instantly, voice hoarse. "You've been out for almost a day." I take a moment to study my surroundings. Adam's right. When I rack my brain, I discover that we're inside Pipe way 17, an area at least two Laquanian kilometers from the resistance base. The blueprints of the irrigation system are drilled into my head from years of training and missions above ground. The mossy, grimy surface of the pipes soothes me, but only just.
"How did you..." I can't control the tremors in my tone. Adam's face is grim.
"It's something I don't understand myself." He answers. I can just make out the worry lines etched across his face. "It's something Eve and I both share. I can absorb and use any form of energy."
