What Once Was Lost

"Hitoshi?" Yuki's voice rang in her ears.

The man with purple hair and deep eye bags looked up. He held two two books in his hand and lazily scanned the shelf before he turned to Yuki. When he saw her, a small smile spread across his face. "Yuki."

Her heart fluttered. "How are you? It's been forever!"

"Good." He nodded. He'd become a fairly popular underground hero and took care of night crime. He was on her list of backup heroes in the Yakuza job. "You? Bakugo?"

The mere mention of his name shot ice down her spine. Her lips pressed in a thin smile and she nodded. "I'm great. Katsuki and I broke up."

"Ah." Shinso stared past Yuki and a ray of sunshine slapped into her. "You guys were the high school drama."

Everyone was so interested in Bakugo's love life. How could someone like him ever possibly fall in love? Yuki nodded. "That was a long time ago."

Shinso smiled and another ray slammed against Yuki's skull. It made her want to puke. "You haven't had a chance to meet my wife, Aiya, have you?"

He knew the answer to that. Yuki turned around to face a woman who suspiciously looked a lot like herself, high cheekbones and big lips. Yuki wasn't invited to the wedding. "I haven't! It's nice to meet you!"

"Yuki..." Aiya wondered. Yuki held her breath when a pang shot through Yuki's gut and Aiya's eyes widened. "Yuki Tanaka! Dynamight's girlfriend! Toshi told me all about you way back when we were dating."

"It hasn't been that long," Yuki laughed. She glanced at Shinso, who's serene gaze was plastered on his wife. They hadn't been married for more than a year. Okay, maybe a year and a half?

Aiya twirled her hair and kissed Shinso's cheek. Suspicion creeped up Yuki's cheeks when Aiya whispered, "I'm getting a coffee. Meet me at the checkout in a few minutes?"

"Sure."

Yuki watched the woman bound toward the cafe. "You guys are happy."

"She's my wife." Shinso shrugged. That ray of sunshine again. If she felt it any longer, she'd have a tan. Yuki didn't want to be tan.

"I'm glad," Yuki said. She was. Shinso had completely cut Yuki out of his life after Mina sent a photo of Bakugo kissing Yuki around the school. Mina didn't mean anything by it—she'd sent it to a small group of friends but someone had sent it everywhere. Yuki wouldn't have even cared if it wasn't for Shinso.

"It was good to see you, Hitoshi." She meant that too. It hurt, but it was good. It was good to see that everyone had moved on from high school. Sometimes Yuki felt trapped by it, but it did give some sort of wretched hope that things do keep moving.

Even the great Dynamight had moved on. In the week and a half they'd been separated, Bakugo was on the news everywhere. He'd moved up the chain to pro hero two and was in Yuki's morning email lowdown, the banner on the TV with breaking news—apparently he'd saved 27 elementary school kids from plummeting to their death in a bus—and in her coworkers' conversations.

"Yuki?" Tohru called when she walked in the apartment. A floating phone bobbed in the air around head height.

    "Yeah?"

"Yup, she's here." Tohru said into the phone. "Although I'm not sure how much I'd call being a blob on the couch is here."

A few moments later, waves slammed into Yuki and she looked up. "What's wrong now?"

    "Nothing," Yuki said.

"Sure," Tohru hummed. "And dogs can fly."

Yuki groaned. "I saw Hitoshi today—he was so happy. I mean he was with his wife and I just—"

"Shinso?" Yuki nodded and Tohru hummed. "That's right! He got married last March."

"Knock knock." The door to Tohru's apartment opened and Yuki's gut dropped. "I got Yuki's favorite! Sushi a la home."

Yuki clutched her racing heart when Tohru snapped, "Don't just come in, Kirishima!"

"You're the one who left it unlocked." He frowned. "Hey Pebble, it's time to eat."

    "I'm not hungry."

Kirishima shook his head and bounded into the apartment. He apologized for running into Tohru before joining Yuki on the couch. "Just a few bites. It'll make you feel better."

    "I'm not."

Kirishima frowned like a puppy stranded in the cold. "Come on, Yuki."
