Yuki walked with Kirishima. She wore a light jacket to keep the cool wind from nipping her skin, but other than that, it was a relatively beautiful day. They walked around a lake and just talked. A turtle strolled across their path and Yuki couldn't help but grin. Her stomach bounced and she glanced at Kirishima, who stared at Yuki with such warm eyes.
"I think I found an apartment."
"Tohru's couch isn't good enough for ya'?"
Yuki playfully rolled her eyes. "It's a few blocks from you, actually. I'm just waiting for approval."
Kirishima smiled completely. It was contagious despite Yuki's quirk. "I'll have to show you around."
"You're acting like I haven't grown up here."
Kirishima pouted. "I have my favorite spots I haven't shared with you."
A bird flew ahead of them and a peaceful smile crossed Yuki's face. She tugged her teal hair back into a messy bun and felt her stomach flutter. It'd be so easy, she realized, to sink into someone else's emotions. In fact, it wasn't until Bakugo that Yuki had felt the satisfaction of blushing of her own accord.
"I," Yuki stopped. He's too close to Katsuki. I can't. "I'd appreciate that, Ei."
"Things don't have to be weird between us," Krishima suddenly stated. "I mean, we were friends before..."
Before Katsuki. "I know."
"Good." Kirishima was settled. He walked with Yuki and bumped her shoulder a few times.
Yuki knew how many girls would've killed to stand beside Kirishima. That's what happened in high school. It was miraculous, really. When it got out that she was with Bakugo, nearly all the bullying died immediately. Some may have been intimidated, but there were definitely some who were so jealous because of her relationship with Kirishima.
But it was off limits. Is it?
"Have you ever—" Yuki shook her head. She told herself to stop it. She didn't need him for the answer.
"What?"
"Why haven't you dated anyone?" Yuki blurted. If Uraraka was right, it was her own fault.
"Oh I uh—" Kirishima's lips pressed together in a lopsided smile. "I haven't found anyone who interests me."
Yuki laughed. "Well, you'd have the pick of anyone!"
Kirishima laughed and glanced at his phone. Yuki's heart plopped out of her chest when Kirishima held it up to her.
Killer clown breaks Gotham's Japanese hero, Athena.
The notification came from Heroes Weekly was about Nishiharu Rin, or pro hero Athena. They'd gone to high school with her. She was a friendly soul and one that Yuki had interacted with only a tiny bit. She really only knew about Nishiharu because of their third year sports festival when Nishiharu decked Bakugo in the finals so hard he nearly was thrown out of bounds.
Of course, Bakugo beat Nishiharu, but...Bakugo fumed for hours over it.
"Is she okay?"
"Hold on," Kirishima said and clicked on the article. He scanned through it and Yuki felt her stomach continue to plummet. "She hasn't left the operation room for over twenty hours."
"What?!"
Kirishima gulped. "Everything's tied down tight. Her agency, Wayne Enterprises, aren't accepting any questioning and they have five pros stationed outside the operating room. That's it. Well, the criminal was found mauled fairly bad. He's in custody now. That's it. There's nothing else."
"How is that even possible?" Yuki wondered if she could get any more information through her job. She shook her head to herself. If it's under wraps, they wouldn't send anything international. "I mean she's so quick—"
"I should check on Sero," Kirishima interrupted. "He's gotta be restless."
"Can I come?" Yuki wondered.
Kirishima looked like he would decline. Until his gaze softened and he set his hand on Yuki's cheek. "Of course, Pebble. Let's go!"
Yuki sat in the passenger seat and looked out the window as Kirishima drove. Back in high school, she remembered Bakugo telling her they had to study mortality rates in different scenarios, including hospital operations. Quietly, she whispered, "Ei, what's the likelihood of someone surviving more than twenty hours in operation?"
Kirishima didn't respond. The constant pounding against the side of her head wasn't a good omen. The car parked outside of Sero's apartment and Yuki's shook and her throat was marbles grinding against each other.
"You can stay here," Kirishima said and set his hand on Yuki's knee.
Yuki gulped and nodded. Kirishima gave her knee another pat before he hopped out of the car and trekked up the stairs leading to Sero's door. When it slowly opened, the marbles in Yuki's throat collided like machinery failing.
Tears escaped her eyes and her stomach churned and biled and Yuki clutched the seatbelt. She'd only felt this much anguish one other time in her life.
