The Work of a Hero

Yuki kept her gaze on the man. Her stomach lurched  when his phone chimed. Courage rushed over Yuki when the man was distracted and she searched the plane. Yuki watched him look on his phone and felt a wave of courage bounced over her. A man in a suit. He counted—counted as if each number gave him more courage.

Yuki shook her head.

"Detective Tanaka!"

Her lungs stopped. Blood pounded in Yuki's skull like a cave-in.

"Come out, Detective!" He waved his gun around. "Come out so you can join the crew."

Yuki gulped. Questions washed over her but she kept her mind steady.

"Alrighty," tail-man said. "I'll kill one person every three minutes you don't reveal yourself."

The passengers erupted. Yuki's stomach dropped to the ground and she cradled it. The talking felt like mammoths walking on ice—mind splintering and indistinguishable.

"Shut up!"

Her brows furrowed. If this was his first time, how could he resort to that? Had he killed before? Yuki examined him. The crew.

"Here's the first!" He held the gun to a boy's temple. Yuki gulped. "Three."

Her fingers tingled. Detective training taught you to take control of the situation. Katsuki taught you what to do.

"Two."

Tears filled Yuki's eyes. The boy whimpered. "Please don't hurt me! My mother—"

"One."

Yuki grabbed the little girl's bear and threw it to the right. Jumped to her feet and yanked the rubix cube out of the sleeping kid's hands and threw it as hard as possible at tail-man. She ran straight down the aisle like a winning throw in a game of darts. She slammed into him and rammed his hand up.

Bang!

Yuki and the boy winced. She swung her other arm around and struck his hand to the left. The gun dropped and Yuki swept it from his hand. She kept her eyes on his tail—unsure of its prowess when she backpedaled. Steady hands held the gun.

"Kneel on the ground!" Yuki's voice was filled with authority. Authority belonging to one who had successfully completed federal training.

Tail-man stared wide-eyed at Yuki. Her throat reeled with a bitterness she couldn't describe—and clenched her jaw. "Hands up! On the ground!"

Compliance. His hands fluttered up next to his head and his legs began to bend. A smile crept on Yuki's lips and she cocked her head. Why pride? What am I not seeing?

Clap!

Yuki's throat clenched.

Clap! Clap!

She did not need to turn around.

"Impressive work, Detective."

A passenger screamed and Yuki forced silence upon herself. Breathe. She fought the trembles in her throat and the urge to go hide in the plane's bathroom. The woman had to have been a thing of nightmares.

Yuki thought about her options. She couldn't turn her back on tail-man, yet she was blind despite the passenger's stressed emotions. Blind was stupid but turning your back was stupider.

"Please look at me Detective," she shrilled.

Goosebumps ran down Yuki's back. Look or not? Yuki was a mouse caught in an impossible choice—cheese or peanut butter.

"I'm waiting, Detective."

Yuki glanced over her shoulder. Her eyes widened. "Why—"

Bang!

Yuki fell to the ground. The white hull of the cabin blurred with the sparse yellow reading lights and the blue aisle strips. Furries punctured her shoulder and a dry mouth swallowed all of the pain she had ever felt. Tears escaped when she coughed and Yuki tilted toward the little girl, who's eyes were wide, red, and blurry.

Yuki's hands pressed against the ground. "It'll be okay."

"Oh this is gold!" The woman squealed. "But Detective, you should know to never do the work of a hero."

Yuki heaved and shook when she raised the gun at the woman who pointed a slender finger at Yuki.

Bang!

Yuki dropped into darkness.
