Nightmares plagued Yuki's mind. She wrapped herself up tightly in her comforter and paraded across her room to the balcony, grabbed a pebble from the plastic cup she kept next to her door, and threw it as hard as she could. She cheered because she actually managed to hit his door, before she did it again. And again.
The door grumpily slid open to reveal a disheveled Bakugo. He glared at Yuki and Yuki immediately cowered under her comforter. The can tumbled her way and Yuki thought she was so cool when it landed directly in the palm of her hand.
"What the hell do you want at two in the fucking morning?"
"I couldn't sleep."
"Is that my problem?"
"No..." Yuki sighed. "Sorry. You're right. You should go to bed."
"I'm awake now." Bakugo kicked snow off the balcony and sat down.
Yuki followed his lead and tightened the comforter around herself. They sat and stared at each other in the cloudy night.
"Have...have you ever wondered what it would be like to not have a quirk?"
"Why would I waste my time on useless thoughts?"
Yuki laughed. Of course Bakugo never thought about it. Having an amazing quirk like that? Yeah, Yuki would never doubt herself either. "I don't know. I just—I mean—It's just—sometimes I can't help but think my quirk is a curse."
Bakugo didn't respond.
Yuki found a single star in the sky and focused on it. Snow melted against her cheeks and she wished she could tell it all to him. Her quirk had ruined so many people. Even her own mother. "I just...I don't know. I don't even know if my emotions are real. I mean, do I even feel things? What if my entire life is just a catalyst of everyone else and I've never felt a thing on my own?"
"What are you feeling now?"
"You." Yuki stared at him. "It's serene. A few moments ago I wanted to retch up some profanities and crawl back into bed, but now it's just serene."
"Close your eyes."
"What?"
"You heard me." Bakugo watched her. He could barely see the deep teal messy bun plastered above her head and Bakugo realized yeah, he despised this emotion. "What do you feel?"
"You."
"What does your back feel like?"
"What?" Yuki's eyes bounced open.
"It's what I do every morning. It's a good routine to check in with my body. Close your eyes and tell me what your back feels like."
"It popped," Yuki laughed. "My lower back aches a bit."
"What do your thighs feel like?"
Yuki flushed. "Tense."
"Your calves?"
"Restless."
"Your neck?"
"Sore."
"There you go," Bakugo said. "There's some feelings for ya."
Yuki laughed. "You know what I meant, Bakugo."
"Did you not feel them?"
Yuki shivered and burrowed deeper in her blanket. "Oh! Can you help me with an assignment?" She received grunt and continued. "There's like this general studies assignment where we're working on professional communication and we have to schedule with someone who's not a gen study student to do a service project."
"What kind of project?"
"I was thinking of working at an orphanage but if you'd rather something else—"
"The orphanage is fine. When?"
Yuki grinned. "In like three weeks?"
Bakugo agreed. The snow pattered harder against the buildings. That single star caught Yuki's attention again. She held back a laugh and tightened her comforter impossibly tight.
"Hey Chicken Bones."
"Yeah?"
"You want to go to that stupid dance?"
Yuki's gaze was blank. Her mind repeated his words twice in her head before she jumped to her feet. "What?"
Bakugo said something unintelligible and Yuki shook her head. "I'm sorry, Bakugo. I think that'd be a ton of fun but you see, I'm already going with someone and—"
"Right." Bakugo nodded. Of course Yuki would already have a date. It's not like anyone would actually want to go with him. "You should get to bed."
"Bakugo..."
He tugged the string and the can jerked out of Yuki's hand.
