Yuki groaned. Her eyes opened and shut just as fast. Constant beeps flooded her ears and she groaned again. Was this hell? After a few moments, Yuki opened her eyes again. Everything was white. The ceiling, the bed. Hospital. It was usually Bakugo in the hospital, not her. How peculiar.
The monitor which revealed a steady heartbeat. Her gaze lingered past the monitor and she smiled. In the guest seat slept a man with blond hair. Speak of the devil and he should appear.
He did not look peaceful. His head rested against the palm of his hand and his neck was cranked harshly to the side. Just behind him, the night sky was in full throttle. Yuki smiled at the stars.
The door gently opened and in walked a familiar redhead. He grinned the biggest grin. Yuki shook her head and nodded at Bakugo. Kirishima bit his lip and darted across the room and sat on the bed next to her. "You're awake!"
"How long was I out?" Try as she might, Yuki couldn't remember what happened.
"Eight days."
"Eight days?" Yuki choked. "What about Christmas? My dad! Haru?"
Kirishima laughed softly and pointed at Bakugo. "He took care of it all. They were gonna fly back home but he told them he'd stay by your side and give them updates. Told 'em it'd make you feel better to know you didn't spoil Christmas."
Yuki relaxed a tad. She wanted to call her family as soon as she could, but for now, that could wait.
"He's stayed true to his word. He hasn't left once."
"Really?"
"The doctors can't even get him to leave."
Bakugo grumbled in his sleep and they both sat in silence for a few seconds. He shifted and his head lulled backward.
"And the heroes are okay with him not working?"
"Uh...yeah...well...He's on suspension for three months."
Yuki laughed. "I knew that'd happen at least once. What the heck did he do?"
Kirishima watched Yuki carefully. "You seriously don't remember?"
"No. What am I supposed to be remembering?"
"Yuki, you were shot three times. It's a miracle you're alive."
"What?" Floaters filled her vision and she pressed her head against the pillow. "Tamiko!"
Kirishima nodded and pushed Yuki carefully to lay back down. "She's in intensive care in the criminal wing. We got her, Yuki."
"Intensive care—" Yuki stopped herself. Bakugo's suspension. It wasn't too hard to put things together once it all clicked. "He didn't go too overboard, did he?"
Kirishima laughed. "Deku had to knock him out to stop him."
"How are you?" Yuki changed the subject. She didn't want to dwell on it.
"You're worried about me even though you just found out you're on your deathbed?"
"Ei."
"I'm good, I guess. I don't know. I've spent so much time dedicated to Katsuki's side. Sometimes it feels like I'm...his shadow. Like yeah we're the number one hero duo, but he's the number two hero and I'm just me, you know?"
"Don't be down on yourself, Ei."
Kirishima laughed. Familiar, childish emotions tugged in Yuki's stomach and she gulped them back down.
"I know. I don't mean too. Old habits die hard I guess. I think I'm just...overwhelmed. There's always something Katsuki's had that I haven't and I love him but damn it hurts. It kills me, Yuki. I've always seen how precious it is and I can't have it."
"If he doesn't value it why can't you have it?"
Yuki's heart ached. Kirishima cleared his throat, "it's complicated. It's his and it always will be. Get some rest, okay?"
"I just woke up. I'm not tired." A yawn gave her away and Yuki grabbed Kirishima's arm. "Can you stay, Ei?"
Kirishima glanced at Bakugo before he made himself comfortable next to Yuki. "Only for tonight, Diamond." Even softer, as if he were convincing himself, Kirishima whispered, "just tonight."
