She lay on Piper's bed the next morning, after her lively evening, still thinking about him. The events of the last week flashed through her mind on repeat.
Obviously, her plan to stay away from Percy had failed quite miserably.
When she went to tell him about the catering job for his mom, Annabeth had repeated over and over, 'get in and get out,' like a mantra. She was convinced that she could tell him the news and then turn around and leave.
Clearly, that did not work. Instead, the minute she looked into his eyes, smiling at her adorably, she just crumbled.
She couldn't help herself. She couldn't resist him. She never could.
She was an absolute mess. She started rambling and fidgeting, and then he was hugging her, and she thought her chest was going to burst open. And the physical touch gave her a strange burst of confidence, so she told him to look for her at Prom, which truly ranked in the top three dumbest things she had ever done in her life. As soon as the words left her mouth, she knew it was stupid. She was just setting herself up for failure, (although she could admit that his gaping face made all the embarrassment worth it, just for a moment.)
His joyful response had carried her for a few seconds, she felt like she was on top of the world, but as soon as she turned her back to him, and his glowing smile was no longer in her line of sight, she slumped. Regret flooded her soon after.
This could only lead to suffering, and she was offering her heart up on a big, juicy platter.
The next day, she forced herself to go right back to avoiding him. It was the only way.
She was pretty certain that he had started avoiding her too. Maybe he was finally done, he wasn't interested anymore, he was tired of trying. Or maybe, he figured out why she was being so weird, and this was his way of telling her that he definitely didn't reciprocate her feelings.
It hurt, the realization that her affection was not shared, devastating more like, but it was just what she needed to keep him out of her head. Their short conversation would be enough to satiate her for now. She was confident that she could get a handle on this whole crush thing.
All was well, aside from the crippling loss she felt every time she saw him across the hall, but other than that, all was well.
Or so she very naively thought. She felt good walking into Prom. She was certain that she had learned how to push Percy to the back on her mind, enough that she wasn't thinking about him every second of the day, at the very least. But then, she saw him in that fucking suit and she was done for. She had never in her life seen someone look like that.
She made a beeline to him, her smile blinding and her eyes raking over his body hungrily. Leo had raced after her, unsure where she was headed. Thank God for her friend because he had been forced to do most of the talking once they stopped in front of Percy. She was rendered nearly speechless.
The suit was made for him, perfectly tailored for his broad shoulders and tapered waist. The shirt beneath it felt like a criminal offense, showing off his entire tan chest and impeccable row of abs, definitely too hot to be legal.
And she knew she was cracking, she could feel herself giving into his pull, her hands itching for him, so she sped off to the bathroom to splash some water on her face. She hoped the short interlude would give her enough time to get a grip.
But then there he was, once again, waiting for her and looking like his sinful self, and she was just so tired of fighting it. She was so, so tired. She didn't care anymore.
