Annabeth didn't like the new lifeguard one bit.
For a start, he was a smartass, always making little comments where she least expected them. Then he was always hanging around the front desk, flirting with Rachel. According to Silena, who had done some digging because she had the hots for her newest colleague, it was Rachel who'd got Percy the job in the first place. Apparently they both went to the same private college, funded by their super-rich dads. Annabeth wasn't sure about that - if they were so rich, why were they working part time at the local pool? - but she definitely didn't care enough to untangle it. Not at all.
The nail in the coffin was when he blew the whistle on her in the middle of a lesson in his third week on the job. "No running," he yelled from where he lounged in the high chair.
Annabeth glared at him. "I'm striding ," she yelled back, not altering her gait.
Jackson just raised his eyebrow indolently. "Don't go setting a bad example for your students and make me blow the whistle again, Chase."
She slowed her steps, fury burning through her, and shot him the bird behind her back. He just laughed. It took a superhuman effort to twist her scowl into a more professional expression for her gaggle of seven-year-olds on their enthusiastic but splashy backstroke.
He cornered her by her locker in the staff changing room later. "Sorry for calling you out like that in front of your class," he said, not sounding very sorry at all, "but I can't let bad behaviour slide. I'm just doing my job."
" Bad beh - hmm." Annabeth clamped her lips together, yanking out her rucksack and then slamming her locker door shut with a resounding clang. To her satisfaction, Jackson jumped back a little.
"How about you just let me do my job, huh?" She gave him a humourless smile. "Blow the whistle on me again and I'll shove it where the sun don't shine."
She turned and strode for the door. "Always a pleasure, Chase," Jackson called after her. She just shot him the bird again without looking and stomped out.
Annabeth tried to ignore Jackson over the next few shifts, all of which they seemed to be working together, much to her irritation. The lifeguard had clearly seized on her annoyance with him because he laid on the faux-charm with her pretty thick. He teased and joked and winked until she was at the very moment of throwing her job to the wind and screaming at him to die in a hole of sulphur , at which point he'd switch to completely ignoring her, laughing with whoever else was poolside and making her blood boil.
By the end of the fourth day of this, she was about ready to wring Jackson's neck. She finished earlier than him today, thano God, and she intended to get home, open a beer and watch a four-hour history documentary. It was this thought that kept the scowl from her face as she hurried out of CHB Leisure.
As she passed the front desk, Rachel called out to her. "Hey, Annabeth!" She reluctantly turned. Rachel was nice enough, pretty funny actually, but sometimes she could just be a bit much when Annabeth was fed up with being surrounded by people. Like now. "A bunch of us are going to Dion's later, you want to come?"
Annabeth paused by the rack of for-sale goggles. "Is Jackson going?" she asked sourly. Rachel raised an eyebrow.
"Percy? Yeah, probably. Why? You know Silena's called dibs?" She snorted, tossing her fringe out of her face.
Annabeth pulled a face. "Barf. I'd rather lick the gutter than chase Jackson. Isn't he your friend?"
"We know each other from school, yeah." Rachel paused to smile and wave at some regulars as they swung in, not bothering to check their passes. "I helped him scrape a pass in ceramics, he helped me investigate the financial aid options for classes."
