I was walking with Mush and Race when I saw her. Every day she walked down this road and I had figured out her story by now. She was on the lower section of the middle class, she lived with her parents and her older sister and she couldn't see. Also, she was incredibly beautiful.

"Hello? Earth to Jack!" Mush said, snapping his fingers in front of my face.

"Sorry, I was just, uh..." I began. "Never mind."

"Hey lady! Watch out!" I heard a voice behind me yell. I whipped my head around to see my worst fears come true. She couldn't see the carriage racing towards her. I bolted across the street and pushed her into the grass.

"Th-thank you," she mumbled.

"Hey, it's no problem," I replied. "What's your name?"

"Kayleigh." I smiled. "What's yours?"

"Jack Kelly, I'm one of the newsies," I told her. She smiled.

"Oh, well I'd better head back to my house," she said.

"No, please. Let me walk you home. I know these streets like the back of my hand," I assured her.

"Okay," Kayleigh replied, blushing slightly. She told me the address, I took her hand in mine, and we headed through the busy streets of Manhattan. Much too quickly, we were there.

"Um, Kayleigh?" I asked, before she left.

"Yes Jack?"

"Well, I was wondering if, um, you would maybe wanna be my, uh, my girlfriend?" I stumbled. She blushed, then leaned up and kissed my cheek.

"I'd love to," she replied. I let out a breath I didn't realize I had been holding, and turned to walk back to the Newsboy lounge.

"Hey Jack! Where ya been?" Kid Blink asked when I got back. The others looked up from their card game.

"He was with a girl," Race said, teasing me.

"Is she ya girlfriend now?" Mush joked.

"Actually, yes. So take that," I replied. From then on, she and I spent most of our time together; her sister taught me how to read, so I began to read to Kayleigh. Sometimes, Spot would let us go to the Brooklyn Harbor and I would tell her how the sky looked that evening. Eventually, her eyesight improved, but she wore glasses. She took up an interest in reading for herself, but she still liked when I read to her. It might sound cheesy, but we did live happily ever after.
