Luna stood at her dresser, getting ready for the dance. Dad had gotten back and helped her get ready and pick out a dress and mask.
The dress was a satiny kind of blue, with flowers and beads sewn into the bodice, it pooled to the floor in a dark puddle. The mask matched, with it’s blue and purple feathers coming out of it, it was spectacular.
While she was getting ready, Luna thought about all last week. After that awkward moment with Simon, she went back to school walking and having difficulty with writing. Because of the brace, it was nearly impossible.
She walked down the stairs, holding the folds of her dress and mask. Her sandal strapped heels clicked on the wood. Dad met her down at the bottom, smiling proudly and a camera in hand.
“Where’s Simon?” she asked.
He snapped an unexpected picture. “He left early. Said that he had to meet someone ahead of time. He’ll get more of an impact when he sees you though. Do you think Lennie will be there?”
Lennie was an old friend that Luna had known in Dallas and apparently he moved to Lotus just like she had. She didn’t know until gym when she was sitting down at the wall. Chisa had left her alone after their... last discussion. She watched Simon stretch and get ready when someone blocked Luna’s view.
His brown hair and scrawny build gave it away, but she didn’t pounce just yet.
“Lennie?” she asked, incredulous.
He turned, his warm brown eyes searching who called his name. When he saw her, his mouth dropped open.
It was definitely him, so she jumped. He absorbed the impact easily, laughing along with Luna. “What are you doing here?” she asked breathlessly.
“I moved.” he said, as if it were obvious.
Luna rolled her eyes. “Why did you move?”
“Because of my dad’s work.”
She slapped her hand to her head. He was smirking, like he used to. “I see you haven’t changed.”
Lennie poked her in the ribs playfully. “Why would I want to change myself? You know how awesome I am.”
By then, everyone was staring at the two.
“How’s your dad?” he asked.
“Good. He’s still writing.”
He laughed. “Does he still have the same manager?”
Luna started laughing too. “Yeah, but she doesn’t come as much as she used to. He’s gotten better at getting his work done on time now.”
“New kid! Get back out there and stretch!” Coach Larry yelled.
He rolled his eyes in response and winked at Luna as he left. She looked over and saw that Simon was watching her.
“What?”
He shrugged. “Nothing.”
And that was who Lennie is.
Luna pursed her lips. Who knew what Simon was doing. But he hadn’t seen the dress, despite his pestering. “I don’t know.” she said, answering Dad’s question. “Oh well, let’s just get there then. These shoes are already killing me.”
Dad chuckled and held out his arm. She took it, making her feel like she was at a wedding. Heck, she was already wearing something blue.
They got into the car, and Luna started to get her mask in check. It was hard to get it in the right place with her curly hair, but finally, she managed it. No one would recognize her.
