When Luna and Simon got home and Dad had gone to his studies after asking, again, if Luna was okay, Simon cornered her.
“What the hell is going on?” he demanded.
Luna glanced up from her homework propped her head on her hands, staring at him. “Depends on what you want to know.”
Simon leaned against the table. “Why didn’t you tell me you had cancer?”
“Seems like you already know what’s going on.” she commented.
“Answer the question.”
She raised an eyebrow. “The second one, right?”
His scowl was almost murderous, but that didn’t intimidate her. “Yes.” he finally said.
“Well, just look at us now.” she said, softly.
Confusion went through his ice blue eyes.
“You’ve been avoiding me. You don’t know how to socialize with me now, do you?”
“No. I don’t.” he said, reluctantly.
“People treat me differently, when they know. They treat me like I’m going to break into pieces any second. Even Dad is treating me that way now.” she continued. “I’ve never been able to do anything that normal people can. I can’t play sports, much less interact with people without being bruised.”
She lifted up her bangs where he had bumped into her earlier. Already, a shallow, faint bruise was showing.
He cursed. “I’m sorry-,”
Luna held up a hand. “Save it. I’m used to it.”
They both lapsed into silence, while she continued her homework, except now, Luna couldn’t concentrate on her homework now. All she could think of was if Simon knew that she would die in two months.
He’ll forget you, she thought. Luna’s breath hitched at the thought. Just like everyone else.
After a while, Simon left, not saying anything else to her and that just made her want him to talk more. To hear his deep voice again. She shook her head at the thought. Luna didn’t have time to deal with romance… even though he was cute.
Her mind strayed as she sat back and closed her eyes, chewing on her eraser. Simon was dangerous, strong, everything that Luna wished for, besides the dangerous part; but, hey, no one was perfect.
She laid her head on her arms, and before she knew it, she was asleep.
Simon walked down the pier, heading towards a dark figure at the end. He went up and stood beside him, looking out into the ocean.
“You’re one of Rupert’s?” he said, the first one to speak.
The thug was smoking a cigarette, nodded.
“Well what do you want?” Simon asked.
“We want you to become our dealer.” he said, his voice wispy.
“No.”
“You don’t want to do that, friend.” the guy said, deadly.
“I don’t care. I’m not going to become a thug.” Simon said, evenly.
“Boy, are you asking to die? You have to pay off your old man’s money, and you sure as hell don’t have that kind of dough.”
“I don’t have anything to do with him. And I don’t want to be with idiot's like you.” Simon said, venomously.
