The day went on as school ended and Luna went home to go home to unpack. She had a lot of fun, despite the fight and her bruised arm from the fight. When, Luna, Simon, and Chisa got to the courtyard, it instantly started to rain light, warm, drops of water, so they took shelter in the library. So much for a nice, sunny day. Not a lot of people were there, and Chisa and Simon detested the smell of books, just waiting to be read.
“You should read more.” Luna said. “It’s good for your mind, and stuff.”
“But I don’t like reading!” Chisa whined.
“Neither do I. It gives me a headache.” Simon said.
“I wasn’t talking about academically reading.” she explained. “Reading can give you a whole new perspective of something. No… it’s more like reading gives you imagination; let’s you think of things that are so amazing because we don’t have that in everyday life.”
The two just stared at Luna blankly.
She sighed in exasperation. “Okay, okay. You guys go do whatever. I’m just going to hang out here for a while.”
“Are you sure?” Chisa asked, politely, but the relief showed.
“Yeah, go ahead. I’ll see you in class.”
So off they went, the day passed as the steady drumming of rain pelted outside. When Luna was waiting for Dad to get her, she saw a sleek black car pull up and park. The engine was still running so she looked around for anybody that was waiting for their ride to pick them up. No one was there. The hairs on Luna’s neck stood up and she only got that feeling when someone was looking at her. It’s been like that all day, but this was different. She abruptly started to head back inside and wait, when a familiar red truck appeared.
Luna sighed with relief and dashed to the safety of the truck. Then it kind of went weirder from there. They drove along the stormy coast passing Spanish shops all closing because of the down pour. As they drove, Kenny Cheseney’s country singing filled the comfortable silence. Dad hardly acted like this morning ever happened, just like it was almost normal --which felt really good after an exhausting day at school.
Dad spoke up, “Hey, Little Moon?”
“Yeah?”
“I need to run by the tax payer’s office to pay for the medical bill.” his voice caught just slightly on “medical” but quickly covered it up with a cough.
“Sure. I don’t see why you need to ask me. You’re the one that’s driving.”
He chuckled at her sense of opinion.
When they pulled up, it was pouring cats and dogs, much harder than it was before. When Dad commented on that, Luna asked, “Why always cats and dogs falling from the sky? Why not… hedgehogs?”
He stopped, considering. “Good question…”
They continued on into the tiny building. It was only one room with a bathroom and a storage closet. It was gray and boring and something that people who are claustrophobic would hate because it felt like the gray walls were closing in on you.
