In the days that followed, I noticed a change in Dean. He seemed more protective. Stressed. I tried to get him to open up to me and tell me what was bothering him, but he wouldn't budge. He'd just flash me a smile and tell me not to worry about it- which only made me worry more.
"So, I'm thinking more of a sunset orange wedding theme instead of the traditional white." Aviva flips through one of many wedding magazines she's bought since becoming engaged. "Lord knows there is nothing traditional about a werewolf wedding." She laughs, the sound light and bubbly. I should be emersed in this- my very best friend's wedding- but I couldn't help the gnawing feeling in my stomach that something isn't right. And I was the only one that didn't know what.
"Hello?" Why couldn't he just tell me? I'm not some fragile porcelain baby doll that would break under pressure. I could handle it. Whatever it was.
"Earth to Selene." Aviva waves her hand in front of my face, snapping me back to reality, "You know if I wanted to throw ideas into thin air, I would have brought James." She pouts, closing the magazine.
"I'm sorry." I pick up the magazine trying to get my head on straight.
"What is going on?" Aviva asks, taking her feet off of my living room ottoman.
"Nothing." I don't meet her gaze, keeping my nose deep in the flower arrangements and wedding patterns.
"Oh come on Selene, I know you better then that. What is it?" She presses, her index finger resting on the top of the magazine, uncovering my face. Sighing I throw the book down.
"What's going on with Dean?" I ask straight and to the point.
"What do you mean?" she asks, feigning uncertainty.
"Come on, Vi. I know you better then that." I repeat, crossing my arms over my chest.
"What do you want me to say? I can't tell you anything." She says, picking up the magazine again.
"Why not?" I fume, the once peacefully atmosphere gone. Tension in its place. "We promised no more secrets Aviva." She closes her eyes and sighs deeply, biting on her bottom lip.
"Do you want me to be kicked out of the pack? All alone in the world?" She asks with frantic eyes.
"Dean would never kick you out. I wouldn't let it happen." I answer her confidently.
"That make me feel so much better." She groans.
"What is going on?" Aviva runs a hand through her hair, grabbing a fistful and having an internal battle with herself.
"Ok fine!" She exclaims, "Has he told you about his brother?" Dean's brother? Why would he matter?
"He mentioned him in passing, not much really." I think back to the conversation in my bedroom. "He said he had something he wanted, and they fought."
"Classic Dean. Always mysterious. It's a lot deeper than that. Tyler was originally the Alpha of the pack. He lost his mate and his mind." Aviva stared off into space as if she were reliving everything.
"Ok?"
"He almost killed us all. That "thing" Dean wanted was the pack. He fought Tyler for alpha rights, and he overthrew him. He banished Tyler and has been working like hell to keep everyone safe and Tyler away." Now I was even more confused, why did one man have so many on edge?
"Ok, so he's an ass but he's Deans brother, how bad could he be?" I ask, not sensing the danger.
"He's very bad. Tyler being Tyler isn't just going to sit in exile quietly. He's going to come back with a vengeance and kill Dean." My eyes widened, fear flooding me. "Kill us all."
