dinner at dan's wasn't what i expected. i knew his house was nice, i had only seen it once in the dark and once in the daylight, but it was big and fancy,
everything was white and gold with dark wood. his dining room looked like something out of a castle or a magazine. a long dark mahogany table was in the center, it could seat probably ten people. a crystal chandelier hung from the ceiling. the crisp white plates were perfectly set along with four different types of silverware along each side. i felt like i didn't belong. but i did my best to fit in.it seemed like dan's father liked me, and dan's mother, hallie. i could see now what he meant about just knowing she knows. she knew for sure.
all food was laid out on the table. dan's father sat at the head of the table and dan's mother next to him.
dan said on the other side of his dad, across from his mom. i sat next to dan.after everyone had something on their plate, dan's mother began the prayer.
"dear heavenly father..." she started. she said a very basic dinner prayer, thanking the lord for our food, our family, our friends, good health and so on.
god had never answered my prayers, not until recently when dan finally came into my life. i wasn't sure either this was a sign for me to try in believing in god again. i had been having doubts over the years, i still tried hard to keep my faith in him, but it was hard.
i wondered why he let me suffer constantly. maybe he was finally letting me breathe. maybe.
"amen," we all said in unison after hallie had finished.
everyone began to eat.
at first dan's parents were talking about his father work and the things he had been doing while he was away. dan rolled his eyes at most of it. i had to hold back giggles every time he did.
then the conversation turned back to dan and i as everyone had pretty much finished their food.
"what are your plans after high school phil?" john asked me. his question seemed like a test, if i said the wrong answer i was done for.
"college," i said after taking a drink of water, "i've thought about law school too."
dan's dad nodded his head with grin. correct answer.
"dan?" he looked more stern now as he turned his eyes to his son, the grin had faded and dan looked nervous.
"um, i'm not sure yet dad," he said looked down at his plate. i watched as john's face turn red and hallie's looked more concerned. wrong answer.
"you should be thinking about this dan, you're a senior now," he said, i could see the rage steaming off of him. why was one little thing setting him off? maybe this was why dan was scared of him, his temper.
"dan," his mother spoke softly, "didn't you tell me the other day you want to go to college for teaching or literature?"
she smiled. she was trying to save him. trying to come up with something that sounded like dan had a plan for his life.
dan nodded and smiled back at his mom.
"i would love to teach, i'm not sure if there's good money in it though," dan said and then looked towards his father. i could see some of the rage fading from his face but he was not happy.
"no money, none," he said and crumbled his napkin in his hands. i took another drink of water. it was quiet for a moment. everyone had pretty much finished their meal.
