phil

dan walked me home in the rain. we huddled under the small umbrella, both of enjoying how close were to each other and actually had an excuse if someone asked. i tried to inhale his scent for as long as i could not wanting to forget it when he would leave me. we both were silent walking home. the thunder was booming and lightning flashing through the sky. when we approached my front door, it flung open.

mother stood there, she looked confused. her hair was slightly messy and she was still in her work clothes.

"hi ms. lester!" dan said excitedly, he was good at acting.

"hello daniel," she stared at us huddled under the umbrella.

"dan walked me home because he had an umbrella and i forgot mine," i explained to mother. the rain was still pouring. mother nodded.

"daniel," she asked, dan looked at her, "why don't you come in for a little bit and dry off, would your parents mind?"

my jaw almost hit the floor when i heard the words come out of mothers mouth. there was no way she actually asked dan to come inside our home.

dan glanced at me quickly and then back to mother and said, "oh, yeah let me just call my mom and tell her where i'm at."

i could tell dan wasn't quite right, he could barely look mother in the eyes and i knew it was because of what she had done to me. it was because of the crucifix she carved in to me to remind me 'God' is watching. god wasn't watching, if anything he was going to burn this place to the ground.

mother opened the door wider. dan put the umbrella down and we both ran into the house. we both took off our wet shoes at the door and dan left the umbrella outside leaned up again the apartment so it would get the floor wet.

"both of you should work on your homework while we wait the storm out,"mother said behind us, dan and i shared a look but nodded at mothers request.

dan called his mom on the phone quickly letting her know where he was, then we got our homework out and sat next to each other at the kitchen table. i didn't have much to do so i tired to help dan with his math homework. mother was sitting on the couch doing her own bible study. she kept glancing up at us, we tried to be anything but what we actually were.

dan kept glancing at mother right when she was looking at us, she would looked down immediately after him catching her stare. dan was angry, i could feel him fuming next to me, he couldn't focus on his home work. i did a few problems for him when mother looked more lost in her bible then trying to watch dan and i.

when the phone rang, i jumped. dan hand flew to my thigh instantly and then just as quickly as he placed it there, he removed it. his touch was still heavenly, i was constantly craving more of it.

mother stood up from the couch and walked into the kitchen to grab the phone off the wall. she talked for a few minutes quietly. dan and i tried to stay focused on his school work while also secretly trying to listen. but mothers whispers were too quiet for us to hear. mother carefully hung up the phone by placing it back on the receiver that was mounted to the wall.

"phil, i have to go into work for a few hours, they are short staff. i should be home by eight," she said to me, she looked upset.

"okay mother," i said trying not to grin as big as i wanted to. i glanced at dan, who was trying to hold back his smile as well.

as mother got ready, we kept pretending to study. we pretended to not notice us glancing at each other every second mother wasn't in the room. we pretended to ignore the constant shaking of our hands after we accidentally bumped our knees together under the table. we pretended to not notice we were both holding our breath when mother walked near us.
