"No she's fine." Lorenzo spoke int he passenger seat, me in the back, one of his goons driving.
Goon is such a funny word right? Goon. It sounds better than thug. Goon. I snickered to myself, opening my phone and flipping the camera to myself, looking at the state of my face.
"She's fine Nicky. She's laughing in the back of the car. I don't know what at." He turned.
"The word Goon." I smiled and he shook his head.
"The word goon apparently." I had my fingers on my nose, making sure it wasn't broken. It was super sore. It could be, I can't really tell under the swelling. I needed to ice it. Looks like I have a few days of no one seeing me. This was going to bruise bad at the very least. Oh my god I can sleep for days and no one can say a word. Thank fuck. "Fine Nicky, I'll put her on." He held the phone back. "He doesn't believe me that you're okay." I rolled my eyes taking the phone from him and bringing it up to my ear.
"Hello?"
"Maddy. Are you okay?"
"I'm fine. Banged head, bloody nose, nothing major."
"Banged head? What happened?"
"Oh one of their guys grabbed me as I got out the elevator and slammed my head against the wall. Honestly I'm fine. No blurry vision, no blind spots, a minor headache but I think that's from the cut more than anything."
"The cut? You're bleeding from it?"
"Nicky. I'm fine." He sighed. "It's not as bad as it sounds. I'm nearly home anyway. You can see when you get home. I'm fine." I handed the phone back without letting him say another word. "He talks too loud." I put my hand on my head. Okay the headache was getting worse.
The cars pulled up out the front of the house and I opened my door, climbing out slowly so not to let on about the dizziness that was turning into nausea. I pushed my phone into my pocket, slowly walking towards the door, blinking slowly and keeping focused on one step at a time. I'd be fine. I've felt worse than this after fights at school when I was a preteen.
"Mads?" I looked up at Arlo. "Baby-"
"I'm fine." I moved him out the way, it not taking much effort. "You guys pander around me too much." I leaned against the door frame, pulling my boots off. Well trying to. I was definitely too dizzy to do this. "Your moms gonna kill me if I walk through the house in bloody shoes." I looked at him and he gave a half hearted smile.
"You're covered in blood and I can't tell if it's your own or not."
"It's a mix I think." He walked over, picking me up bridal style. "I don't need-"
"Shut up, you're dizzy as hell, you can't keep your eyes still." He sighed looking over my face as he walked inside. "Mia can you grab a bag of ice and bring it upstairs?"
"She said she was fine." I heard Nicky shouting, his heavy feet getting closer. "Why are you carrying her?"
"Dad leave it. She is fine, just a little dizzy."
"So she's concussed? Fucking brilliant. Maddelena. You said you were fine."
"I am fine." I rolled my eyes as Arlo carried me up the stairs. "You're son picked me up and won't put me down."
"You're dizzy." He looked at me.
"Shut up." I furrowed my brow, wincing slightly.
"Alright stop moving your face, you're making it start bleeding again." He shook his head putting me on the side in my bathroom. "Cross your legs for me so I can get in the cupboard."
Tucking them under myself, I sat in the middle of the counter, turning and looking at the damage properly.
"You're a mess." He lifted his eyebrows, dropping a first aid kit onto my side. "You didn't have to go down there."
"Yeah I did."
"No you did-" He started wiping the dried blood from around my head, putting pressure on it to stop it bleeding again. "You might need stitches in this one if you can't keep your forehead still so stop raising your eyebrows."
"It was the guy from the club."
"Who was? That did this to you?"
"No this was one of his men. The guy from the club was the Bonetti heir." He stopped, looking into my eyes. "I didn't know either."
"But he kissed you."
"I know." I nodded slightly but his free hand kept my head still as he returned to cleaning me up with a fresh wipe. "I shot him."
"You what?"
"Through his ribs." He smiled. "You're not supposed to smile." I was smiling at him too.
"Why not? Serves him right for kissing you." He threw another bloody tissue into the sink. "Did he say anything?"
"Not really no. Said he'd see me around." I chuckled and his brow furrowed. "Sorry."
"Don't be baby." He shook his head turning his attention to my nose. "Did you have fun?"
"Yeah."
"How do you feel?"
"My head hurts." I smiled softly and he nodded. " 'It's gonna hurt'" I mocked.
"Well at least your attitude is still here. Glad he didn't knock that out of you." I could see him thinking as he opened the door, taking the bag of ice from Mia and closing the door again. He gently placed it over my nose, putting my hands on it to keep it still whilst he stopped my head from bleeding. "So the guy who did this to you? What happened to him?"
"I stabbed him. He had me on the floor when he punched me. So I stabbed him, twisted it enough to make sure he wasn't getting back up. Don't worry, you don't need to go hunt him down." I rolled my eyes and he chuckled, placing steri-strips over the wound to keep it together. "Is it bad?"
"Not the worst you've had. But I need to keep an eye on it." He followed it up with a Band-Aid. "That was really dangerous for you to do you know. You shouldn't have gone."
"I'll open this wound again if you tell me I shouldn't have gone." He rolled his eyes. "I'm not going to be like you Arlo, sitting back, letting other people get their hands dirty. I like it. I enjoy doing the dirty work."
"I know you do. That's the problem. I need you to be safe and here, you like putting yourself in situations where I can't do that."
"Then let me keep myself safe." I tilted my head. "You guys taught me to look after myself."
"I know we did. Wish we hadn't and you'd stay home like Mia."
"God what a boring life that would be."
