I sat out there for about 5 hours. Blank stares into the sky as the sun rose higher. The drive out here takes an hour so by the time I was at Nicky's it was about 11am. Later than I would have liked. Especially with no phone. But I just got lost in my thoughts.
I was staring that long I genuinely lost track of time. Like it all vanished in what felt like 5 minutes. Maybe I entered a time warp.
I stayed sat there. In my car, in the drive I'd pulled into more times than I can count. Where I'd argue with Arlo more times than I could count. But this time was different. All those times, I was filled with confidence. Right now I couldn't even look at the house. I don't know why. I'd been back here since we got back. I just had my head against the steering wheel, slowly breathing.
Okay. Enough now Maddy. Get you're act together.
I sat up, pulling the visor down and looking at myself in the mirror. I wiped the mascara from under my eyes. The puffiness had faded and I wasn't red now, which I was glad for. I let out a long sigh and plastered on my fake smile, climbing out the car and walking with my power up to the front door, knocking once and opening the door.
"ONLY ME." I shouted. You don't enter this house if you're not expected without telling people who you are. The bullet holes in the door frame tell you that exactly.
"Mads?" I pulled my fingers through my hair, looking up at the stairs where Mia had her eyebrows furrowed. "Where have you been?"
"Just driving about. Why?"
"Because you've had everyone looking for you." I turned to Lu. Stood in the doorway, his eyebrows high on his forehead, arms crossed. "Thought you were with Mia all day today? If I wanted you this is where you'd be."
"I'm here aren't I?" I smiled. "I just went for a drive first."
"Maddy. I woke up at 8, text Mia and she said she hadn't seen you. It's almost 12." I didn't like the look on his face. It wasn't anger, or even disappointment. Not fear or worry. It was something colder. "Where have you been?" I looked up to Mia who had snook off whilst he was talking. What is it with this damn entry way and Men always asking questions I don't want to answer.
"Just driving."
"Come on." He held his hand out, walking up to me. "Take me up to your room. We need to talk." I looked at his hand as it closer to me. "Please Mads. Don't make me pick you up and put you in my car instead." I furrowed my brows at him, groaning and grabbing his hand, pulling him up the stairs, down the hallway and into my room, closing the door behind him a he looked around.
I walked over to my desk, bending down and unplugging my laptop like I had come here to pack up.
"Cute room." I looked over my shoulder and smiled as he looked around, scowling at the bed.
"Did you just scowl at my bed?" I chuckled, leaning my bum on the desk as I wrapped the cord up for the laptop. I did so slowly, dragging it out as long as possible.
"Yeah. I know what's happened there." I rolled my eyes as he sat down on it and stared at me.
"Why are you staring at me like I've done something wrong. I've literally just been driving around."
"Since 4am."
"I mean 4.36am if you want to put a time on it."
"Why were you bandaging your arm at 4am Mads?"
"I just reopened it. Nothing major." I shrugged. He sighed, running his hands through his hair.
"Turn your laptop on."
