"Have you even eaten today?" He raised his eyebrows at me from across the pool as I slid the now empty glass behind me.
"What time is it?"
"Like 10 past 12."
"Then no. I haven't in the last 10 minutes."
"Ha. Fucking. Ha." He rolled his eyes. "What do you want to eat?"
"I'm not hungry."
"That's not what I asked." He raised and eyebrow, climbing out the pool and wrapping a towel around his waist. "What will you eat?"
"I'm not hungry Lu." He smiled. "What?"
"Lu." I giggled as his nose scrunched up. "Any allergies? I don't want to kill you."
"Not that I'm aware of." He tilted his head. "Well I've not tried poison" I shrugged and he laughed, walking back into the hotel room, coming back with his phone a few seconds later.
I was such a water baby at heart. I would and could happily sit in here all night. Watching how it rippled under the smallest movements. How it made me feel weightless, worriless.
My lifted my head as water dripped down it, Lu laughing from the stairs.
"What was that for?" I giggled looking at him.
"I asked you a question."
"Oh." I moved over to him, crossing my arms and resting my head on the side of the pool. "Go for it."
"Food will be here soon and you can't eat in the pool."
"I don't want to get out." He bobbed down, lifting my head so I was looking at him with all my attention on only him. They way his hand sat gently under my chin would make me pay attention if I was being sliced open. And I'd sit quietly if he asked me to. Just so long as he held me like this.
"We can get back in after if you still want to. But you need to eat." I stuck my bottom lip out and he looked at it. "Put that away right now." I pulled my head from his hand instantly. That was sudden. Abrupt. "Come on. Please get out." He held open a towel but I just moved deeper into the pool. I didn't want to get closer to him right now.
"I don't want to."
"Maddy."
"I said NO." I snapped and he looked at me, tilting his head a tiny amount. Barely noticeable.
"Okay." He spoke softly again, sitting down on one of the chairs. I stood in the middle of the pool, arms crossed just watching him. He wasn't forcing me to do anything. He was just sat watching me, watching him, towel still in hand. Waiting for me to decide I was ready. "What are your plans tomorrow then?" I shrugged. "Why have you gone quiet?"
"Don't feel like talking." He put the towel down slowly standing up and taking his own back off, getting back into the pool. His movements were slow but they had me backing up anyway. I didn't like this. This was a stupid mistake. He should go. I should have left when I had the chance, before he came by tonight. I should have gone to another hotel. Vanished.
"Maddy." Barely above a whisper. I shook my head, backing into a corner. "Baby, what's wrong?"
"S-stop." I put my hand out, landing it dead center of his chest. I felt powerless right now. Nothing to protect myself. Nothing to stop him hurting me. And yet I just let him flounce in here like he wasn't the fucking enemy. Like he couldn't take me out in a heartbeat if he wanted to. I was strong, determined. But I wasn't stupid. I knew when someone was stronger than me. When they were a threat. "You should go. You shouldn't be here."
"Mads." I jumped up onto the side of the pool, quickly climbing out and moving around the pool edge, carefully but fast. Bigger steps than normal. "Maddy." I could feel myself shaking as I bent down, pulling the robe back over my soaking wet body. At least I was covered now. Back beside my gun. I felt slightly better. "What's wrong?"
"You - Um- You should go." I tucked my hair behind my ear, tying the tie on the robe as tight as I could, double knotting it. I didn't want him to undo it again.
"I will after we eat." I pulled my lip between my teeth, chewing on it, pulling off skin until I tasted the iron from my blood. "Maddy stop. You've made yourself bleed." He moved quickly towards me and I flinched, falling backwards to the floor, backing up as fast as I'd fallen until my back was against the wall. "What the fu- Mads." I watched his feet. How they stood there, knowing not to move any closer. He knew I didn't want him any closer. I did. I so did. I wanted him as close as possible. I didn't want him to leave.
I don't have feelings. I don't catch feelings. This is why we don't get feelings. Because they show you their true colours and everything changes and you end up getting hurt Maddy. God you can't even listen to your own fucking brain. Can't even follow your own fucking rules. Pathetic.
I blinked after what felt like I had been staring into the abyss forever. And when I did, he was there. Sat opposite me, where his feet had been. Bags of food in between us, it all opened, laid out like a buffet.
"Welcome back to earth. My names Lu. I'll be your waiter today. Can I interest you in a mozzarella stick?" He held a breadcrumb cylinder out above all the food. I'd have to move to take it from him. It was too far to reach. I really do like Mozzarella sticks. I slowly lifted my hand moving forward an inch and taking it from his fingers, moving back against the wall as I split it in half watching the pull before taking a bite.
I could feel his eyes on my as I ran my nail over the breadcrumbs, letting loose pieces fall into the robe.
"Mads?" I looked up. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have spoken to you like that. You having your bottom lip out was apparently a lot hotter than it should be but that isn't an excuse for me to have demanded something from you. I don't like that it hurt you. I'll try my best to not snap at you again." I looked back down at the mozzarella half, breaking it in half again and pushing the smaller of the two into my mouth.
I wasn't sure what to think about him apologising. That he worked out what he did that flicked me like a switch. And it wasn't one of the half arsed apologise that turned it around on me. It was a full apology. Accepting he messed up, apologising and telling me he wouldn't do it again. It wasn't an empty promise. He said he'd try his best. He'd actively think about it. I let out a breath, moving to my knees and crawling around to him.
I slowly laid my head down on the one leg he had on the floor. He had his clothes back on now too. I must have blanked out for a good while there. He wiped his hands after putting some fries in his mouth. moving my hair off my face.
"I'm sorry." He was looking down at me. "I made you feel like you aren't safe with me didn't I?" I nodded slowly as his thumb brushed over my cheek. "You're always safe with me Maddy. No matter what okay?" I stared at him. "I promise." He held out a pinkie finger and I looked at it, then him, furrowing my brow. "Well how else will you know I'm serious?" He smiled softly as I put the last of my cheese into my mouth, wiping my hand on the robe before wrapping my pinkie around his. "I pinkie promise Maddelena, I will never, ever intentionally hurt you."
