I watched the cab drive away, turning slowly to stare at the drive. I was still furious and I could see him now, emerging from the house. If he even dares to touch me, I swear to the devil herself, the black eye I gave him yesterday will be the least of his worries. I moved my hair off my face, holding my bag tight and starting with a strut back to the house.

Arlo stopped dead in his tracks, knowing by how I was holding myself I was not in the mood for him. It's a shame, because I had been in a great mood until he blew up on me. I could have understood if it was just about the whole disappearing act, but I think this was something much deeper with him.

"Maddy-"

"Don't you say a fucking word to me." I walked straight past him.

"I'm sorry that was so rude of-"

"I said not a fucking word." He grabbed my hand, stopping me from moving any further with every bit of force in his body. "Let me go right now. I've had enough of your shit today."

"Let me talk."

"Let me go."

"No."

"Then no."

"Did you run off with whoever that was last night because of me?" I turned around quickly, forcing his hand from me with the speed.

"Not everything is about you Arlo." I stepped back, putting some space between us before carrying on walking back to the house. God this was so much longer of a walk than I remember. I'm walking but the house just looks the same distance away.

"Mads."

"Get fucked Arlo." I could hear his quick paces on the pebbles behind me, trying to catch up. I should have taken my heels off. This shit is hard to walk on.

"Maddelena, let me fucking fix it."

"No. I don't need you to come fucking save it." He was in front of me now, blocking anywhere I was trying to move to get around him. "Don't worry." I spat the words at him, looking him up and down in hopes of hurting his ego a little more.

"I didn't mean it like that."

"Yes you fucking did."

"No-" He sighed grabbing my arms. "I didn't. I don't know why it came out. You don't need anyone to save you. You do it yourself easy enough. It just spilled out my mouth Maddy."

"Let me go before I make sure you can never have a precious little heir."

"You wouldn't dar-" I did. Knee straight to his balls, making him fall to his knees. Men are so fucking weak. Especially him. He wasn't made for up close and personal work. He's too soft. He can be tough when he needs to be, when whoever it is is tied down or when he's got back up. Then it's like a monster comes out of hiding.

"You underestimate me way too often for how long you've known me Arlo." I didn't even stop to speak to him. The second his hands were off me, I was moving away.

With me it was different. There wasn't a monster hiding in the darkness. I was the monster. Through and through. Top of my head to the tip of my toes. Nothing but darkness. Stone cold, black heart. That's what they all say. Arlo doesn't. He says there is something soft in me. Somewhere he says he knows there is. I don't know where he's looking but it's not here.

"Maddy-" He groaned from the floor, trying to stand up. I pushed the door open, leaving him out there alone. I couldn't be arsed pandering to him today. This incessant obsession with trying to prove to me that I like him has to stop. If he thinks I'm soft for him, he's wrong. I'm not soft. I don't have feelings or emotions. I can't. Things get messy if I do.

"Oh. Hi Maddy. Where have you been?" I smiled at Amelia, the youngest of the family, Arlo's little sister.

"Just out. You're brother is having my life."

"Is that why you just kneed him in the balls. He looks pissed." She chuckled, peeking out the curtains. "Oh. He's up."

"And that's my cue." I smiled. "I need to sleep but I need my nails doing. Want to go out later?"

"Yes!" She clapped excitedly. "3ish? I'll come get you."

"Sounds good." The door opened and I rolled my eyes, snapping on my bitch face. She smirked, sitting down in the chair by the door to watch this unfold. I took my heels off and started walking to the stairs.

"Maddy, will you just- Hi Mia- Will you stop?"

"No." I scoffed, walking up a few stairs. "3pm Mia, yeah?"

"Yeah."

"3pm for what? Where are you going now?"

"Oh my god Arlo? Why are you so fucking obsessed with knowing where I am, where I'm going, who I'm with. I don't fucking belong to you."

"I never said you did." He dashed around me, stopping in the middle of the steps. "I just like knowing you're okay." I raised an eyebrow. "It's my job to-"

"If you say keep me safe I swear to god I will fucking throw you down these stairs." Mia laughed behind me and I had to force the smile down. Her laugh is contagious, such a sweet girl for the family she was growing up in. She would not survive.

"Mads-"

"Move out the way Arlo. I'm not fucking joking. You have well and truly pissed me off today and I was in a good mood before I called you."

"Why?"

"Why what?"

"Were you in a good mood." I put my head back and pushed him to the side of the stair case, moving past him. "Did you-"

"Sleep with him? Is that what you want to hear? That he fucked me right there in a bar? Everyone watched and then we all shared a cigar and a bottle of whiskey? That's what you're thinking happened right?" I was on the landing now, walking towards my bedroom door.

"Well did it?" I pushed my door open and turned, facing him, looking him up and down, smirking.

"If that's what you think happened then that's what happened." I shrugged "Because I'm a whore right? That's what you've been insinuating this whole time?" I stepped backwards into my room, urging him forward too. "That I let any guy who comes close touch me like you did last month? And you don't like that. That's why you were staring him down last night. Well get a load of this. I'll let every boy in the fucking state touch me if that's what it takes to prove to you that we are nothing." I slammed the door in his face. Prick. I was bluffing. No guy was touching me and he knew it. But I don't know how else tog et him to cut the shit out.

"Maddy open the door."

"Fuck off Arlo." I turned the lock on the door, watching him try to open it. "I'm not opening it. I'm going to bed."

"Mads. Please." I walked away from the door, dropping my heels and bag onto the bed before walking into my bathroom, slamming that door behind me before falling down it slowly. He was exhausting.
