I stepped into the entry way, looking around slowly as Lu ushered me further in, closing the door behind us both. It was so open. You'd look at this place from the outside and expect it to be cold, it wasn't. It felt like a show home, everything had it's specific place. I could tell already. Yet it was homely. There was a faint smell of baking and home cooking, like it was done so often it just kind of stuck around.
"Luciano!" I felt Lu's breath on my neck as he let out a sigh and we both looked ahead. A stocky man, maybe early 50's, greying beard stood before us. "And you must be the girl stealing my son and making him move across the country." I felt him eyeing me up and down. Lu said he wouldn't be home. I could have dressed a lot better if I knew I'd be meeting his father today. Lu's hands on both my hips as he stood behind me tightened, reassuring me.
"I'm not making him move." What a great first impression Maddy. I could feel my brows furrowing. Keep calm Maddy. Let's not get defensive at your boyfriend's mafia father shall we? I don't think that would end greatly. "I'm moving. He's refusing to let me go alone." I crossed my arms, pulling his jacket tighter on me so it covered me up. I felt Lu's breath hitch against me, almost like a faint laugh.
"Yeah like I'd let you go alone with that maniac stalking you." I rolled my eyes and looked up at Lu.
"He's not-" I sighed.
"I'm joking Mads." He kissed the side of my head as his dad cleared his throat and we both looked back at him.
"I've watched that CCTV of you Maddelena." I pressed my lips tightly together. "You put up a good fight." Lu snickered behind me, slowly stepping us closer to his dad. I was starting to get the feeling that Lu and his dad had a good relationship. He kept giggling, I could feel he was holding it back. But there was this playful energy between the 2 of them. It was comforting. I didn't feel as on edge now. "You shot my son though. I wasn't too happy with that." I smirked.
"Had to do what I had to do." I watched as his dad looked up at Lu for a few seconds. They had obviously spoken about me often. I could tell in how they were looking at each other, slight smiles on both their faces. He liked the attitude. Maybe Lu had spoken about me in such a way his dad didn't believe I was real. Like Lu had made up this badass woman for some reason. But now here I was, stood before his dad not even apologising for nearly killing his son.
Their eyes came back down to me and Lu's hands wrapped around me further, pulling the bottom of his jacket up.
"Not even an apology?" I stared into Lu's dad's eyes. They were just as Blue as Lu's were. Captivating just as much as well. But they held something else that Lu's didn't. I don't know what it was.
"Why would I apologise for doing my job?" I settled my face and a small smile. "I've told Lu before, when I'm working, my feelings don't get involved. Everybody is a nobody."
"Would you do it again?" Lu snickered behind me, earning him a quick death stare from his father before he locked my eyes again.
"Depends on the situation."
"Same situation."
"Are you asking me if I'd kill your son to protect my family?"
"Yes."
"Depends which family." Lu chuckled, putting his head on my shoulder. He looked at Lu who was shaking his head against my shoulder, chuckling silently which was making me smile and laugh slightly too, his arms wrapping around me tightly.
"Exact same situation."
"Maybe somewhere not critical. But I don't think he'd test me now like he did before." That earned me a swift ha from Lu as he lifted his head. "But if I had no other choice, yeah. I would." I raised my eyebrows ever so slightly as Lu lifted his head and his grip on me loosened. "But it works the other way around too. I'd kill my family if they put his life on the line." I locked my eyes with his dad to show him I was serious. I already had the plan in place in case that happened.
"Mads-" Lu spoke softly and I shook my head gently, not even looking up at him. His dad broke into a smile.
"I like you Maddy." He smiled, leaning against the back of a sofa. "I can see why you've got my son wrapped around your finger." I smirked as Lu squeezed me.
"I wouldn't say he's wrapped around my finger." I sighed. "That would mean I control what he does."
"You don't?" His dad tilted his head.
"Not at all. Well apart from forcing him to stay with my uncle whilst I worked."
"Yeah. And you got shot, so that's not happening again." I looked at him and raised an eyebrow slightly.
"Careful who you're making demands at there Luci." He smirked, shaking his head. I turned back to his dad who was smiling at us both again.
"You're very independent aren't you Maddy?"
"Very." I nodded. "Especially when it comes to work. I don't like people getting in the way." He nodded, looking at Lu and raising an eyebrow. It was such a small gesture I don't think he knew I'd noticed it. I had. I notice everything. Like the 3 other men stood in doorways around the room.
"Anyway dad," Lu stood up, wrapping my fingers in mine. "It's been a long day. I'll go get Mads settled and I'll come back down in like 20 minutes." He pulled me backwards slightly, turning me so I had my back to his dad and then up the stairs. Once we were out of sight he picked me up, letting me wrap my legs around his waist. "He likes you." I smiled, running my hands through his messy hair. "He doesn't like many people Mads."
He pushed a door open, closing it with a kick as he continued into the room and slowly sat down on the bed, keeping me around his waist.
"Did you mean what you said down there?" I lowered an eyebrow.
"I said a lot, you'll have to be more specific." I smiled slightly.
"That you'd kill your family for me?" I sighed, nodding. "Promise me you won't."
"What?"
"If that ever happens. Promise me you won't kill anyone for me, if the choice is me or them, choose them."
"Lu-"
"Maddy please."
"No."
"Maddy-"
"No." I pulled myself out of his arms, standing up. "I'm not promising that or even agreeing to it."
"Mads. If that situation pops up where they're holding a gun to my head, no matter who it is, there will be a good reason for it. Prom-"
"No." I snapped, crossing my arms. "I'm not promising it Lu. Because if it's going to be anyone it's going to be him. We both know it. And if there's a gun at your head because of him it will be in my fucking hand and I am not doing that again." He furrowed his brow, confused. Shit. "I'm not promising anything Lu. I'm not going to watch you die at my families hands-"
"No, we're not skipping over what you just said." He stood up slowly, moving towards me. "Say it again."
"No."
"Maddy."
"No." I shook my head. "You need to go talk to your dad." I swallowed hard. Fuck sake Maddy. Couldn't even keep your mouth shut for 24 hours.
"Why would you be holding a gun at my head Mads?"
"I won't be." I won't. That's not a lie. I'd have Arlo's dead body on the floor before he gave me the option.
