Chapter 31

Xavien walked in front of Alice the entire time, leaving her behind him to drown in her thoughts.
Those words kept repeating in her head.
"He'd be so happy to know I found you"
he had said.
Xavien hadn't looked at her at all since he said that, and Alice hadn't tried to communicate. She had no idea where they were going or how long they had been walking for, all she knew or at least thought she knew was that Xavien might know Kid.
She remembered the first day she met Xavien, and how his smile was almost exactly like Kids.
"Xavien" Alice called out.
He turned around, and Alice saw that his face had no emotion to it, his movements lifeless.
"Yes, Alice?"
"Can you please not walk so fast, and actually explain to me what you meant back there, and who you know that knows me?"
He looked at Alice, and his face twisted into a forced half smile.
"Try to catch up."
Alice changed her pace and tried her best to walk next to him.
"Who did you mean?" Alice asked, trying to catch her breath.
He didn't answer, and just kept staring straight ahead into the nothingness of the road.
It seemed like it could go on forever, and no cars had gone by since they had started walking down it which was a few hours ago.
"Think about it, Alice. You know who I mean."
"Kid?" Alice asked quickly. "Is it Kid?"
" I heard so much about you from him, Alice. He was so worried, and once we figured out you'd be in the same hospital I was in we planned it all out. I knew that the hospital was going to try to go against you. He was right, your to smart for your own good. The hospital knew that too."
Xavien took a deep breath, and when he exhaled it seemed like he was breathing out a whole lifetime of hurt and confusion.
"When I first met you, why did you look at me like that? Like you knew me, or I reminded you of somebody?" He asked.
"Your smile. It reminds me of Kid's smile. They're almost exactly the same."
He nodded.
"See, too smart for you own good. Now Alice, I need you to breathe. I need you to stay calm, keep your heart beating steady, and follow me. Don't freak out, promise me you won't freak out.
"I promise" Alice choked out, it felt her heart had dropped into the bottom of her stomach and she couldn't breathe right. But she kept a calm face for Xavien.
There was a old barn up ahead at the end of the road, the doors were tied shut with a chain lock and the red paint was peeling off.
Xavien took off the chain lock and pulled the doors open, motioning for Alice to follow him inside the barn.
She did as told and as her eyes adjusted to the dim light she saw a person across from her, leaning into the shadows.
There was something about his face, something Alice new she would recognize anywhere.
Her heart felt like it had stopped, and she tried to swallow her spit, but even that felt like she was swallowing boulders.
Goosebumps shook her body and she let out a shaky cry.
"Kid?"
