It seemed as if the man drove to their destination for hours, and Alice was having a hard time staying awake. The radio was playing a soft tune which seemed to further induce sleep upon her. At this point all she could see around her was road, and broken down trees. There was no point in her speaking to him, because all that came in return was silence. She had tried a few hundred miles back.
The man pulled over to the side of the road, and slammed his car door shut. She heard hushed voices coming from outside, and suddenly she was being pulled out of the car. Too tired to fight back, Alice let out a strangled grunt, and fell upon the ground. Looking up into the blue sky, Kid's face came into focus first, and then the man's.
"What's going on?" Alice asked as Kid pulled her up.
"We had to get out of there, Alice." Kid replied.
"There was security set up inside of your house, police armed and ready as soon as you step inside. Neighbors watching, squad cars waiting down the block. How could you have thought to go back?" The strange man asked, adjusting his black jacket.
Alice looked over at Kid, almost as if she was asking his permission to speak. He half smiled at her, but his eyes were empty.
"My whole life was in that house." The man nodded, and motioned for her to get back into the house.
"We need to keep moving. I cannot speak to you about these things in the car, even that is risky."

Kid took her hand and led her inside the door. His hand in hers made her feel safe, even though nothing about her life was remotely okay.
