You know when you stand up really fast and your vision blurs, your head aches for a moment and you feel as if your going to pass out?
That's how Alice felt, the moment Kid made eye contact with her.
She grabbed ahold of Xaviens arm, and shut her eyes tight.
Maybe it was just a dream, she thought, if she could keep her eyes squeezed shut maybe he'd go away and she would wake up to a normal life.
Cold hands cupped her cheeks, and familiar lips kissed her forehead.
"It's not a dream." Alice's voice broke as she managed to speak.
"It's really you, isn't it? After all this time, all this goddamn time."
Alice opened her eyes, and as they adjusted to the light, Kid's face came into focus.
The face she had been longing for, for what had seemed like years.
She took in every detail of his never aging face, noticing how tired he looked. His usually bright eyes had dark circles under them, and his face was wrinkled with worry.
He was worn down, and his eyes held a look that made Alice's heart fall into pieces.
Broken, and defeated. He was screaming inside, and Alice knew she was the only one who could calm the storm inside of him.
She pulled him into her arms, and held onto him for dear life.
Inhaling his familiar smell, and taking in his warmth, Alice felt at peace for a few seconds and she knew it would be too hard for her to let go. So they stayed like that, clinging to each other. Finally in each others embrace, where they belonged. The feeling of home was washing over the both of them, like the way it feels when you get into warm blankets fresh out of the dryer, after a long stressful day. Except their long stressful day had stretched into years. It was like the world didn't matter anymore and they were just together, spinning in their own little world with nothing to worry about.
They finally pulled away, not entirely though. Their hands remained entwined together so tight even a tornado couldn't pull them apart.
"What do we do now?" Alice asked, her words barely slipping out. Her heart felt light, and all her emotions were at rest, floating peacefully. There was no more pounding, no more screaming inside her head. She didn't want to get right back into action, she wanted to lay with Kid forever. But she knew there were things that had to be done, there always was. Their life together was a never ending escape plan.
"Oh, Alice" Kid sighed, "I've missed you so much, you don't understand. Being apart from you was possibly the worst thing that I've ever had to go through, but I'm afraid we can't stop now. We can't have a break, there's things you need to know and places we have to be."
Alice nodded, trying not to let disappointment flood over her.
She had only just found him again, and couldn't bare the thought of losing him once more.
Kid nodded at Xavier, and Xavier waved goodbye to Alice.
"I'll see you soon". He said, and disappeared out of the barn door letting it slam behind him. The noise echoed into the silence between Alice and Kid.
He led her into the back, behind the steps to the loft and she saw a mattress laying there, with cabinets surrounding it. Clothes were thrown around in piles.
"Have you been living here very long?" She asked.
"I've been in and out".
"And are you informed on what's been going on with me?"
"Of course I am, Alice. And I'm so sorry I couldn't rescue you at first. Sometimes I truly believed you needed the help you could've got."
Irritated, Alice sat down on one of the cabinets.
"What do you need to tell me?" She asked.
"It's a lot Alice, and I'm not going to be able to tell you right away." Kid began, but stopped and put a finger to his lips to hush Alice.
He seemed alert, like a watch dog, yet he was frozen still and had no emotion on his face.
The barn door crashed open, and Kid grabbed Alice immediately. Lights flooded in all around them, and hushed voices echoed over the entire barn, bouncing off the walls and creeping into their heads.
Alice looked over at Kid and he closed his eyes, it looked as if he was praying. A look of concern, and worry written all over his perfect face.
It was in this moment that Alice realized Kid was not the same anymore. He was mentally older and wiser. He knew things Alice couldn't even begin to understand.
His arms were wrapped so tightly around her, and she knew he would do everything to protect her.
The footsteps stopped, and started again. But seemed to leave the barn. The door slammed shut and kid let out a sigh of relief.
He let go of Alice ever so slowly, and she turned around to kiss him on the cheek. When she came up to face him his eyes were flooded with shock and terror.
Alice opened her mouth to say something, but nothing came out. Suddenly she was falling, and everything was going back. There was a searing pain in Alice's ribs, but she couldn't move to figure out what it was. Everything went black, and Kids hands were no longer on her arms. The only thing she could hear was the rapid beating of her heart, and her choked attempts at breathing.
