Maddy walked through the graveyard, she couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. The tombstones loomed over her like silent sentinels, each one marking the final resting place of someone's loved one. She recalled the events of the morning , thinking about her lawyer her mother had got her in her defense. She shuddered as a cold breeze blew through her hair, and wondered if the spirits of the dead were watching her every move.

She walked the same path she did when she first visited. Remembering the cards and pain she brought along with her, but still felt at peace here along with the other souls roaming on the same path on the other side.

It was a place of silence and stillness, the air thick with the musty scent of earth and decaying flowers. Tombstones and monuments jutted out of the ground like crooked fingers, casting long shadows in the moonlight. The rustle of leaves and the occasional hoot of an owl were the only sounds to be heard in the eerie darkness.

She looked at the rich history of the town, with graves dating back centuries. The names etched into the stones told stories of soldiers, prominent politicians, and ordinary people who had lived and died in the small community. As Maddy walked through the rows of graves, she couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the legacy left behind by those who had come before her, those whose families had been a part of this town for centuries just like her friends she was closest with.

Maddy walked along the rows until passing a familiar tree that looked over a century old before making her way through wild strawberry bushes. She stood before the grave, staring blankly at the name etched onto the headstone. It had been months since she had last visited, but the memory of the pain was still fresh in her mind. The memories flooded back, and she could feel the lump in her throat growing.

She stared at the name engraved in stone, knowing that it was not at all who was buried underneath her. She heard a twig break as she spun her head around the trees looking between them searching for something that was once watching her from afar as she sat here. The orange and yellow wildflowers she held in her hand touched the ground as she spoke quietly.

"I'm sorry Sarah. I know I never knew you but you didn't deserve what she did to you." She whispers as a gust of blows through the naked trees.

It was a strange feeling, standing there, looking down at the place where her loved one was supposed to be but instead a stranger laid there . A part of her still loved them, still yearned for their presence, but another part of her was consumed by anger and hurt. It was a complex emotion that she couldn't quite untangle.

She knelt down beside the grave, running her fingers over the rough surface of the stone. Tears welled up in her eyes, blurring her vision. She couldn't help but remember the times they had shared together, the moments of happiness and love that had seemed so fleeting.

But then the memories shifted, and the hurt came flooding back. The lies, the deceit, the betrayal. It was like a knife twisting in her gut, reopening old wounds that had never fully healed. The anger built in her eyes as each tear dropped off her cheek. Her chest moved up and down as her fist clenched.

A yell came from her throat as she hit the grave over and over again until one hit cracked down the side of the grave. The top of the tombstone broke causing it to fall like a tower being struck down by lightning, the name fell with it. She hated the girl who was supposed to be down there, she hated herself. She often wondered what it would have been like if she hadn't pulled the trigger. Would she have forced her to run away ?

The previous night she had asked her girlfriend to run away with her for the second time in the past few months. But still the same answer, she couldn't leave the people she loved behind even if it meant losing the one she loves most.

Maddy sat there for what felt like hours, lost in thought and emotion. She reached for a pack of familiar red and white cigarettes and smoked more than she ever had.  Breaking the stone somehow relieved her pain. When she finally stood up to leave, she felt a strange sense of release.

It was as if a weight had been lifted off her shoulders, and she could finally start to move on from the hurt and pain that had consumed her for so long.
