My fingertips glided across the cold golden heart locket she gave me under the christmas lights a couple months ago. I fixed it in place on the middle of my chest and took one final look in the mirror, touching up my hair. I finished grabbing a few of my belongings including some tinted chapstick and my phone as I heard her in the background zipping her bag up.
My converse crushed the frost glazed grass as I walked to the familiar black car sitting in her driveaway. I waved goodbye to Pepper who was barking in the window, wanting to come along. I slung my backpack over my shoulder and fixed my green moss coloured sweater reminding myself of the outfit I wore on my first day at Clearwater High.
"Ready?" Billie asks and I respond with a nod. My nerves were kicking in again like they always do when a new semester starts.
"We better have the same classes or I'm never coming to school again." She jokes, putting her right arm behind my headrest backing up the car onto the crumbly road. I looked down at my lap smiling, I always get butterflies when she does that.
We pulled up seeing many people our age walking in the red two story building along with Jason leaning against his truck waiting for his girlfriend to join him.
"Hey! We haven't seen you guys all week !" Zoe and Jason say running up to the car as we get out.
"Yeah, way to ditch us." Zoe skips towards me.
"Becauseee earlier this week wasn't even mandatory, why did you guys go?" I say pulling Zoe in for a hug as we begin to walk up the steps.
The three of them continued their conversation in front of me as I got slower behind them. The pole by the stairs to the entrance that once held up a missing sign of Sarah Jackson was no longer there.
People were starting to forget the missing girls . Maybe that was a good thing.
"Ali isn't here yet?" I asked Jason as we all walked towards the office to get our new schedules.
"Uhhmm I'm not sure. I talked to her Wednesday but I haven't spoken to her since." He says examining his new schedule.
It feels weird without her. Alison, Billie and I have spent so much time together since that night. Every Chance we had to have a sleepover we did, and whenever it was only me and Billie my mind went wandering off about what Alison was up to in that very moment.
Was she okay? Was she going to hurt herself? What if she tells someone? The questions went on and on like clockwork as I lay in bed every night.
I took out my phone while we waited and texted her where she was. Believe me I'm all about skipping school , I am barely ever here but the first day never seems like a good day to miss. Maybe she's just late.
"What's your last name dear?" The sweet woman asks while moving her large glasses closer to her eyes, higher on the bridge of her small nose.
"Uh Lockwood, it's beside Maddy." I say with a smile as I feel Billie intertwining her hand with one of mine.
"Oh! I remember you love, you transferred here last year! You're Katherine's girl." She says catching my attention when I hear my mom's name come from her mouth.
"Yeah! You know my mom?" I ask curiously while my friends fill the room with laughter about stupid shit behind me.
"I do, I do. My Arnold and my sons own the Honey Bee's bakery on main, I always see your mother there at lunch. She is so sweet." The older woman says reminding me of yesterday night when me and Bill went to get pasta there, so her family owns it.
"Oh we went there last night it was so good, right Bil? I tug on her hand for her to agree with me.
"Mmmhmm." She says smiling and laughing about something with the others.
