The person I least expected to see walk up to the podium....Claire?
I looked over to Kit who was sitting beside her. She looked over to me, shocked that the girl I befriended stood up. Kit mouthed a I dont know before I turned my head around to Claire.
My mind raced with questions as I stared at the girl who had grown close to this year. What was she doing up there? For a moment I thought the judge had made some kind of mistake. Was she here to support me, or to testify against me? She was so innocent and sweet I never thought she would do anything to harm me, but now I wasn't so sure.
"Claire Bailey Jackson, do you swear to only tell the truth and nothing but the truth?" Mr.Mckenzie asks her.
Claire Bailey Jackson....Jackson? Was she related to Sarah?
As the proceedings began, my fears were confirmed. Claire was indeed a witness against me, but why? I couldn't believe what I was hearing. How could she betray me like this?
As the trial continued, I couldn't help but feel a sense of disbelief and betrayal. This was the person I had confided in, trusted, befriended and opened up about my relationship with Scar too and now she was using them against me.
"I overheard the argument between Billie and Maddy in Italy after she had been cheating on Billie with my former roommate Kit." She said tucking her curly hair behind her ears.
What the literal fuck. She's such a liar.
"I heard them explain how they had done something to Robin and that they were worried about the police finding out." She lies as the room gasps.
"And did you hear anything about the whereabouts of Robin?" Mr.Mckenzie questions her.
"No but they were definitely arguing about Robin and well...." She stopped talking.
"And what? Finish your sentence please sweetheart." He encourages her to speak up.
"They were also arguing about the fact that Maddy was doing cocaine in Italy....and with Robin last year around halloween." She confesses.
Ugh fuck her.
The room was filled with gasps once again. I didn't even bother looking back at my parents. I just shook my head pretending she was lying.
"She also said she had lost her phone at the fair the other week that our generous teachers arranged but that was another lie." She sucked up to the judge.
"How was it a Lie Claire, tell us." He asks her.
"Well I went on a walk during the fair by the forest, you know the one behind the football field? And I saw Maddy digging a hole and burying her phone in it. After she left I picked the phone up but she had already broken it so I couldn't turn it on." She says loudly.
It was her. It was her luring me into the forest and almost trapping me with the bear trap. It was her aiming arrows at me. My mind traveled back in time to when she was telling us about archery at the camp she went to, and suddenly I remembered her putting apples in the desert she had made and offering me a bite after I had told her I was allergic a few days earlier.
But why? She didn't even know Robin.
"Well thank you for coming forward and providing evidence against Madeleine, do you consider yourself close with Robin?" He asked Claire.
"No I was not, I actually never met her." She says.
"Then why did you decide to come forward and shed the truth for all these people today?"He questions.
