Steady
I'd like to pretend that my life had become a steady course of day-to-day routine, like a calm river that flows. Forget the fact that I cried myself to sleep or the silent conversations I had with the stars.
Or even the feeling that, lately, everything hurts.
I sighed as I turned to look out through the floor-to-ceiling window of Manila Marriott Hotel to gaze beyond the oval pool, where Makati financial District was shimmering across.
"Ahh.. ever charming Adrianna."
I whirled around when I saw a beautiful hispanic woman, who was wearing an Alexander McQueen halter wrapped gown. She was slowly approaching me, while holding a flute of champagne; a smile playing on her red lips. It was Tía Monica who flew all the way from Salamanca for abuelita's birthday.
"Tía Monica you look beautiful as always" I said kissing her on the cheek while holding her hands
"Gracias hija.. Did you cut your hair?" Asked in surprised and renewed wonder by Tía Monica. Her four-carat diamond tear drop earrings and impeccable taste of jewellery around her neck, a sapphire blue necklace, highlighted her beautiful face.
"Tía. Yes, the stylist kind of snipped it a little bit shorter than I expected" I smiled at her, remembering how Mama Beng would like to call the hairstyle as "The Lob". Shoulder-length hair with big waves parted down the middle. Wavy locks, as she said, focused on the cheekbones while not making them looked too full.
"Regardless, itsuits you hija. You look radiant"
To the enormous staircase with gold balustrade that goes to the circular entrance of foyer, I spotted my other aunt.
"Tía Chantal" I called out as she descended the stairs and entered the room wearing a sea-foam green Jean Paul Gaultier tunic dress
"You're looking so sophisticated than the last time I saw you" I said as she made her way to where Tia Monica and I stood. She always had a distinctive trendy style in clothing. Nothing too tacky but she made sure no one else had it in Philippines after rampaging the high-end boutiques all across europe.
I watched how my aunt basked in the glow of my compliment, smiling widely at that. Her shoulder-length bouffant hair and Mikoto pearl studs complimenting her cheekbones and deep set of brown eyes.
"The last jet setting with your Tío Philippe to Monte Carlo did it. It's glorious up there." She proudly regaled the cocoon of her domestic bliss with her healthy tan. Despite the years together, Tia Chantal look very much in love
"Maybe we can have a get together on July. Just to escape the horrible Manila weather"
"That's a good idea, Tía" I said, smiling at them. It wouldn't hurt if I start patching things up with my Madrigal aunts; being back in their good graces for awhile now.
