All my life, I taught myself to be docile and self-cautious. I drove myself ceaselessly to almost-perfection for years.
More or less.
So what happened next, happened so fast. Who would've thought, I would be running away from my engagement years later. And it was far from self-cautiousness I taught myself with.
"Nawawala si Ms Sobreviñas"
I heard them say before I snuck through the hidden corridors next to the fire exit to move without being seen in the CCTV.
Breath in. Breathe out.
Clenching my jaw, I tried to make a quick dash from the pillar that I was hiding, down to the next stairs on the fire exit.
"Dito sya nagawi!!" I heard one of the securities hurled right behind me. I rounded at the corner and hid myself.
"Wala sya dito. Hanapin ko sya banda doon, ikaw dito"
It was followed by numerous footsteps. Their relentless pursuit and the echoes of footfalls that followed the corridor were drown by my beating heart.
After I calmed myself, I bolted from my hiding spot. tiptoed down the tiny stairwell before reaching the staff lift, it was a tiny box space, cramped where they deliver most of the room service with.
When I made it safely to the basement, where most of the trucks and logistics happen for the hotel.
I heard the radio of one of the security stationed in the area.
"Nawawala si Ms Adrianna"
"Paano nangyari yon? Yari tayo kay Boss Madam nito"
I feel the suffocating air of fear as I duck my head to stay hidden. It had robbed my breath. I was suddenly afraid. I tried not to think about it, of what would happen if I get caught.
I moved further back, just between two trucks, only to collide with a solid chest.
Firm hands held my thin shoulders. I panicked briefly but managed to let him loose when I kicked his shin with my heeled shoes.
"Ack! Nandito sya!" I heard him calling over the radio, asking for a backup, thereby alerting everyone.
I kept running, never looking back. My hair loose, over my shoulders as I grabbed my skirt and ran some more.
Someone tried to grab me but it seems, I have my luck with me and I slipped right through their fingertips—escaping my way further far a narrowed alley. But the rest of the guards rushed into a narrowed path to chase me.
"Get her!!" Somebody bellowed behind me.
They'll never catch me, I told myself, even as panic tightened around my ribs. I have to get to the wall...to the street...to Maven.
Gasping for breath, I bolted through the sea of people, of a buzzing entrance and murmuring crowd—all wondering what the hell is going on. I continued running away like my life depended on it, for it did at that time.
The gravel crunched beneath my heels as I sprinted through the back gardens, heart pounding louder than the footsteps behind me. Moonlight draped over the marble statues and hedges like silk, but nothing about this night was soft.
Behind me, I heared voices barked orders. The guards were closing in. The night air cut through my lungs like ice as I ran, dress torn at the hem, heels long abandoned in the marble foyer.
My heart pounded like a war drum in my chest. Behind me, the gates roared open, voices shouting my name—commanding, desperate, furious.
"Adrianna! Stop! You're making a mistake!" I heard my Grandmother say behind.
