After school, I was waiting for Zev next to his car. I was nervous about meeting Zev's dad, he was the alpha of Zev's pack and I hoped he was okay with me knowing about them. I noticed Priscilla heading towards me and I stiffened slightly.
"Hello Liana," Priscilla said with a smile.
"Priscilla," I nodded, watching her warily.
"So the truth is out," Priscilla gave me a sad look. "You must be so upset."
"Huh? What would I be upset about?"
"Well, I assume Zev told you everything." Priscilla said with wide eyes. "You must be worried about him finding his true mate."
"True mate?" I repeated, feeling my heart sink. I had a feeling I wasn't going to like hearing this.
"Oh yes, shifters all have true mates out there somewhere," Priscilla continued." At least that's what some believe. They even have a name for it when you first see your mate. Moonstruck. When you find them, that's it. You don't want anyone else, only your mate. So while you and Zev have your little relationship, everyday you will have to worry about him finding his true mate and when he does, he'll drop you in a heartbeat. He won't be able to help it." She clucked her tongue." Poor little human." She gave me a mocking sad look and then sauntered away.
I stared after her, feeling as if someone had punched me in the stomach. Was it true? Did Zev have a mate out there waiting for him to find her? And if he did, where did that leave me? Was it true that if he met his mate he would just dump me? But if it was true, then why was he with me now? I was sure he wouldn't mean to hurt me, so why would he risk it?
"You sure you're okay?" Zev asked me as they walked up to Brent Armstead's house. "You've been so quiet."
"I'm fine," I said. I hadn't brought up what Priscilla had told me. I was already stressed enough meeting his dad and seeing their healer. I didn't have it in me to deal with anything else, not today anyway. And maybe, I admitted to myself, I just didn't want to know. I grasped Zev's hand and held tightly as we entered our teacher's house. "Are you sure about this?"
"Yes," Zev said firmly. "Don't worry, my dad already knows about you. And I want Brent's wife to take a look at you, I don't like that you bruise so easily and -"
"Am so weak and clumsy?" I finished with a sigh.
"And tire out so much," Zev finished. "Lorelei is our healer, it won't hurt for her to look you over."
"Even though I'm just a human?"
Zev stopped and gave me a stern look. "You are not just a human. You are my human."
I shivered a little at his possessive tone. "And you're my wolf," I said softly. I pushed the worry about true mates away and focused on the man approaching them.
"Hello."
An older version of Zev stood before us along with Mr. Armstead and a kind looking woman.
"So this is her," The woman said with a grin.
"Yes. Liana, this is Lorelei," Zev introduced us.
"It's nice to meet you," I smiled.
"And this is my father, Konrad," Zev pulled me closer. "This is Liana Lachey."
"Hello, Sir," I said shyly.
"Hello Liana." Konrad said. "I understand you had some excitement in the woods the other day."
I flushed. "I'm sorry, I know I shouldn't have been in there. I mean, I knew Zev didn't want me in there alone but I had no idea -"
"Relax," Konrad said in a calm voice. "We're all just glad that you are all right."
