I wasn’t sure who was more shocked, me or the girls in the car. Shelly was just sitting there with her mouth open, the other girls completely silent.
“Err…you should probably go.” I muttered to her, not taking my eyes off Niall who was waving at me frantically from the balcony, a stupid smile on his face.
Shelly simply turned to me as though she thought I was completely insane. She quickly checked her hair and make-up in the mirror before throwing a look in my direction.
“I look awful! Why didn’t you tell us he was going to be here? Oh my god I look gross.” She snapped at me, flicking her hair over her shoulder.
She looked fine.
“Look, I promised him I wouldn’t say anything okay.” I lied, quickly glancing back at Niall, noticing my grandad next to him was laughing.
Oh crap, how long has he been left alone with my grandad??
Not only would that be extremely embarrassing, but – he might have spilt about my parents. And if Shelly and the rest of the girls stayed, they would find out too.
Why can’t life ever be simple?
“I promise I’ll organise a party or something, that way you can properly meet him okay?” I pestered, feeling a little guilty at her crestfallen face. But she lit up at the word party.
“Isn’t that a coincidence, I’m having one on the weekend! Tell Niall he is totally more than welcome, and tell him to bring the rest of One Direction!” She was bouncing up and down in her seat, still staring at Niall through the window. The rest of the girls hadn’t said anything yet, looking too shocked to comment.
“Um yeah I’ll mention it to him.” I mumbled, certain that I wouldn’t.
He wasn’t going to come to a party thrown by school kids. He hadn’t even bothered to contact me, why would he come to a party I was at?
But then again, why the HELL was he at my house??
Shelly and the rest of the girls started squealing, she even leant out the window to hug me.
“Seriously babe, make sure he says yes okay? Love you heaps!” She exclaimed, before they drove off down the street.
And thus ended a relatively awkward afternoon, but I could tell an awkward night was in store.
“Elli, don’t tell me you’ve made some friends at school? Shock horror!” My grandad joked, nudging Niall who was laughing.
Ah good, now they have inside jokes.
“They’re not my friends they’re just – doesn’t matter, what’s going on?” I folded my arms, walking up the steps to the balcony. Niall grinned.
“Nice to see you too Elli.” He said, reaching out to hug me. I pulled away, I don’t know why. Niall did this awkward arm move pretending that he was scratching his head.
Luckily, my grandad decided to make it less awkward by saying ‘I’ll let you two talk’ and heading inside.
Niall slowly sat down on one of the sofas my grandad had set up on the balcony, looking up at me.
“I’m sorry we didn’t contact you, it’s been a busy two weeks.” He looked a little guilty at that, avoiding making eye contact. I didn’t look at him.
“Yeah well…it kinda sucked a little bit.” I shrugged, annoyed at myself for admitting that.
I should act cool, pretend like it doesn’t bother me. Guess that plan went out the window.
“Well you know, you’re the one who left me that morning. No goodbye or anything.” He looked up for the first time. Oh shit, he was right. Suddenly I felt bad. He had let me stay at his house, not expecting anything from me, just making sure I was okay.
And I had just left him. Why did I do that?
“I know, I’m sorry.” I mumbled, sitting down next to him on the sofa. He smiled quickly.
“It’s nothing, you don’t have to be sorry for that.” He put an arm around my shoulders, the feeling so familiar and warm. God I missed this.
“I should explain though, about why we didn’t call you.” Niall began, running a hand through his hair.
“I guess by now you’ve come in contact with some fans right?” He asked, gaining an answer from the look on my face.
“Thought so. They were going crazy all week, sending us messages about how much they hated you. I didn’t want you to get hurt or anything. Plus well, management kind of stopped us from calling you. The first time I mentioned it, they told me that I had to maintain that I was single, and that being seen with you again would make it seem like I wasn’t. They told Zayn the same when he wanted to call you. So yeah, I’m sorry if you got the wrong idea because – well, I’ve missed you.”
He said that last part rather quietly. But at least I had got a clear explanation from him. Although it did raise a fair few questions.
Such as why on earth was Zayn wanting to call me after I had blatantly rejected him?
But there was one thing I really wanted to ask.
“If you’re not allowed to see me…then why are you here, Niall?” I asked quietly, folding my arms from the sudden chill that had picked up. He looked nervous for a second, turning away from me.
“I just wanted to see you again…and I guess I don’t care what they say.” He decided, nodding definitely. I laughed.
“Such a rebel.” I mumbled, giving him a quick smile. He smiled back, staring right at me for a while. I thought I was about to faint.
“What?” I asked, my lips creeping into a nervous smile as he studied my face a little longer. He shook his head, flicking his hair away from his eyes.
Wow. Please never do that again, for the sake of my sanity.
“It’s just – you’re still the same. I love it.” He shrugged, nudging me a little. I turned away as quickly as I could, keeping my eyes to the ground as I felt my face heat up.
“What, did you think I would have a massive identity crisis just because you didn’t call me back?” I queried, nudging him back to let him know I was joking. He chuckled, crossing his arms and throwing his legs on top of the sofa, his arms backed behind his head.
“I thought you’d hate me, or at least strongly dislike.” He was resting on his elbows now, looking up at me. I sighed.
“I wish I could.”
Did I just say that out loud? Well then…
He looked a little surprised, before he gave a small smirk and looked up at me.
“So what are we doing tonight then?” He asked, his bright blue eyes piercing my own. I was a little lost for words.
“Err…you actually wanna hang out with me? Again?” I mumbled stupidly, feeling embarrassed.
He grinned, sitting up again and leaning over to me.
“Oh of course not, I just drove all the way over to test the new tires on my car. Of course I do!” He threw his arm around my shoulder again, pulling me into him. I felt my head find its place on his shoulder, fitting perfectly.
“Well um…” I pondered, with nothing coming to mind. Its times like this I wish I had a budding social life. “We could um…Oh God I have no idea.” I laughed, feeling slightly hopeless.
Niall shrugged. “Well, what about right here? Your grandpa and I were halfway through a conversation about Manchester, he knows his stuff.”
And that was how Niall Horan ended up in my house on a cold Tuesday night.
