Chapter 13

It had been two weeks since my night with One Direction, and I hadn’t heard a single word from them.

They had been all over the news, of course. Every night there was a new scandal involving the boys, usually coming back to whichever lucky girl they had chosen to make theirs for the night.

For a few days, I was one of those girls.

Not only was my face postered all over the internet in a few happy snaps of Niall and I entering the restaurant together, but someone had taken a photo of Zayn and I at the club – not a very modest photo.

In fact it was quite the opposite, considering the photo featured him eating my face.

You can imagine the headlines that came out when both those photos got released on the same night.

“Two Directions? Mystery girl sees both Niall Horan and Zayn Malik on the same night.”

“Horan it up with Malik.”

And they were the nicer headlines. After seeing them, I had gotten into the habit of leaving mycomputer closed in the corner of the room, never to be turned on again.

Of course, my grandad had found the whole thing completely hilarious. At first he was a little annoyed at me for not coming home that night, but he assured himself that ‘those boys seemed nice and responsible’ and that I was in safe hands.

And after the initial ‘Thank God she’s safe’ stage, he launched into the ‘Elli is a complete joke’ stage, beginning when a story came out in the paper, featuring me.

“Elli!” He had called up to me, about a week and a half ago. “You’re in the paper!”

I had bolted downstairs as quickly as I could, ready to rip the paper out of his hands but it was too late. He was already laughing.

“Just like your mother you know.” He chuckled, handing me the paper. I sat down on the couch with him, sighing at the headline ‘GIRL GOES TWO DIRECTIONS.’

“What, did she also get spotted going on dates with two famous people in one night? Not that they were dates anyway.” I finished, throwing the newspaper on the table, unwilling to read it. My grandad grinned, crossing his arms and leaning back on his seat.

“Well, she did love seeing a few boys when she was younger. Had to keep a careful eye on her.”

I had smiled at that.

And at that point, I was very grateful for my grandad. Any other parent might have gone mad at their child not coming home during the night, and then appearing on the front page of gossip magazines in a very compromising position.

But he had laughed it off. Because he trusted me, and he knew I wasn’t stupid.

And I knew at some point, I would have to learn to trust him back. That involved telling him about what I might have seen that night. About those eyes, belonging to a man I might have seen before.

But I decided not to tell him, because I had convinced myself that it wasn’t him.

There was no way he could have found me. He was simply a sad, bitter and cruel man who was trying to scare me by saying he would come back.

It wasn’t going to happen, and my eyes were simply playing tricks on me that night.

Besides, it had now been two weeks since that night, if he wanted me, he would have found me.

I was annoyed at myself for being more concerned with the fact that One Direction hadn’t even thought about me since that night. I hadn’t gotten a scrap of news from them, any of them.

As much as I tried not to let it bother me, it did hurt a little.

What hurt more was when I forced myself to go online and read up about them. The worst stories were the ones about Niall being out with Katie, the girl in the blue dress from the night at the club.

Apparently they had gone out to a movie together and were now practically an item.

I had no right to let that hurt me, but it still did.

To distract myself, I kept going to the greenhouse with my grandad, I kept seeing Lucy.

I decided that I much preferred the company of children; there was no drama, no scandals, nothing to worry about. They had this innocence that I so envied. I would give anything to be that young again.

To add more sorrow to my life, school started in two days. I was going to a fancy college to finish my final year, where I knew nobody. Great.

Making matters worse, some of the teenagers in town actually recognised me from the One Direction stories. I had been in the city shopping for my uniform (yes, we have a uniform) a few days ago when I was stopped by a group of teenage girls, looking like they were about to explode.

“Oh my God, are you Elli?” The one who had tapped me on the shoulder had asked, clutching to her friend.

I had stood there for a moment, at a complete loss as to how they knew my name.

“Err...” I had managed to say, before they went completely insane.

“SHE KNOWS ONE DIRECTION! OH MY GOSH.”

“Are you and Zayn actually dating???”

“Can I get a photo with you Elli?”

I had stuttered a bit more before hailing the nearest taxi, jumping in as fast as I could.

I actually shouldn’t be allowed to hang out with famous people, I’m way too awkward.

Since I only had two days till school went back, I decided to make the most of it.

Somehow, that involved sitting on my bed watching one direction videos on YouTube.

I don’t know why I do this to myself.

Whilst I spent my Friday night crying to myself about One Direction not contacting me and the fact that school was going back in two days, I realized that at least one good thing had happened, or rather not happened.

Whoever that man was – he hadn’t come to find me. Not yet.
