By the next day, word had got out that a girl who knew One Direction was at Roundfield College, and everyone tried talking to me. I had about twenty new friend requests on Facebook from people I didn’t know, only accepting Taylors, Shelly’s and Mia’s. It was kind of scary how quickly word had gotten around, which included the teachers.
One of the staff who would have been about thirty five had come up to me today gushing ‘Oh those boys are very fit aren’t they? Maybe I could get a signature for my daughter?’
Maybe not.
And it didn’t stop there. I had sixteen different girls come up to me and ask if they could have the boys phone numbers. I didn’t bother telling them I didn’t actually have them. Nor did I mention that none of them had bothered to contact me for more than two weeks.
At lunchtime, I followed Taylor to his usual hang out spot, which was in a ravine off campus.
He introduced me to his boyfriend Tony, a tall boy who had dyed his hair purple. Also better looking than me.
I was kind of glad to be around people like this. They were all smoking cigarettes and talking about how much they hated school – not exactly my kind of people, but it was nice to be around people that didn’t talk about One Direction every two seconds.
Conversation was easy with them – the only hard part was when Tony had asked me why I had moved from Australia.
“Personal reasons.” I muttered quietly, but luckily Taylor had put an arm around me and changed the topic quickly. He could sense that I didn’t want to talk about it, I like that about him.
“So I hear you got sucked in by the evil cult of Shelly.” Tony had asked through a puff of a cigarette, his eyes piercing me.
“Apparently I’m going shopping with them tonight.” I sighed, throwing my head in my hands. “Please help me.”
Taylor threw his hands in the air. “Don’t look at me, you made that mistake, now you will pay for it.” He exclaimed, pulling Tony’s cigarette out of his mouth and throwing it on the ground. Tony, who placed a kiss on Taylors cheek at the exchange also nodded.
“Seriously though babe, prepare to endure countless hours of ‘Oh my God, One Direction are sooo hot!’”
Tony was right.
Exactly three hours later, I found myself stuck in the middle of a shopping centre with Shelly, Mia and three of their friends, who hadn’t stopped asking me questions about One Direction since we got here.
Right now, we were in Topshop checking out some of the dresses that had just come in.
“Would it be weird if I bought this?” Shelly had asked me, holding a black mini dress in front of me. “I mean, I know it’s the same as the one you wore that night you and Zayn hooked up but it wouldn’t be weird would it?”
Oh god.
“Um, no go right ahead.” I mumbled, not bothering to tell her that I had gotten my black dress second hand at an Op shop in Australia. “But I mean, it’s not like they have a fetish for black dresses or anything…” I finished, turning away quickly to check out some of the dresses on the rack behind me.
Shelly laughed, patting me on the shoulder.
“Oh my gosh you are so funny!” She gushed, holding the dress close to her. “Is that like the kind of girl they go for? Someone funny?”
I can’t deal with much more of this.
I shrugged and turned away so she couldn’t see me laughing, but it didn’t deter her from pressing on.
